I don’t see a way to back up my configs unless I just do it manually. Is there an easier way?
If you have the Samba share turned on, it is very simple to copy the files:
I don’t bother as my entire HA setup is backed up nightly and uploaded to Google Drive by the Home “Assistant Google Drive Backup” addon.
I do have backups but if I need to restore a single YAML file, can you get access to that?
@ssams If you decompress the archive you will find the file but it is a PITA. If you believe you will need to do this often (I never had the need to), then you could set something up to sync the files from the samba share to a NAS or some other location so you can easily go in to replace just one file.
Thanks! As I am just really learning YAML and all the formatting, I need it! ;). Setting up SAMBA now, and will use OneDrive.
@ssams By the way, I too am in TX (Austin) and came to HA from ST after about 8yrs with them. I am so glad I moved to HA!
I just downloaded a 2.5GB backup and hunted for the files. You will have to decompress multiple archives to get to them as they are buried 3 archives deep in the homeassistant.tar file. I use 7-Zip and for some reason I can’t right click on those archives to decompress… I have to open 7-Zip, select the file and then hit extract. All in all it took me about 10 minutes so I don’t recommend this process… You could also just make a copy of the files before you make edits, or a folder sync tool (but a bad file may overwrite a good backup), or it may even be possible to use github versioning system.
EDIT: If OneDrive supports versioning then you should be fine otherwise it will overwrite your backup as soon as you save a change thus losing your backup.
EDIT2: Thinking about it, you know what I use to store “backups” while I work on the code for my ESP32 projects? Notepad++ … I open a tab and paste the code there, then I do whatever I need in ESPHome knowing I have an easy to retrieve copy. Even if you close Notepad++, it will preserve the file even if not explicitly saved.
Example:
The app was closed and when I opened it to take the snapshot it had all my unsaved snippets ready for me (see new xx tabs)
Cool, small world. I need to get the rest of mine off of ST as it dies. Sad they are killing it the way they are.
Anyways, I have/use 7-zip but yea that sounds like a PITA. Right now, I keep screwing up formats and needing to look back. Making so many changes, I wanted an easy way to jump back a day if need be.
thanks again and good point on OneDrive - will keep that in mind.
seeing update - I use N++ as well. I am just bad about keeping track of where I am. I am no programmer!
Same here, not a programmer… I hack my way through until it works…
I got fed up with ST in Aug 2021 when they started limiting to 200 devices or something like that. Maybe it was temporary but I just pulled the plug. At first I thought a gradual migration was best, then I simply tore down everything in ST and paired my 200+ devices to HA in a day or two. Just over a year later and my home does an insane amount more than it did with ST.
Hey guys San Antonio. We have better margaritas… Trudys Mexican martini is not a marg and is therefore summarily disqualified.
Also formatting help:
Im with Alex - I just use Google Drive Backup and let it go. I’ve never had need to open an individual file in the backup (yet) but do check to ensure I can on occasion.
And welcome! You’re about to find out what these systems can really do.
Thanks. I am up in Arlington myself. Best margarita I have found so far is down in Port Aransas at La Playa Mexican Grille. The name of it escapes me but it is amazing. So is their food. Little house, cash only. We go there every time we make it to Port A
