ESPhome device Wifi connection issues within a mesh environment

Hi all,

I am having issues with multiple ESPhome devices being unsuccessful to connect to my mesh wifi network (using TP-Link Deco, S4 and P9 units).

Having looked at the UART logs (bottom of the page) I see that the signal for my network (BuburuzaWifi) from the different access points is successfully picked up and the ESP tries to connect to one (by the way not the one with the strongest signal first) and fails with for various reasons every time.

I have short listed some of them (they are not all in order, see log at the bottom of the page):

I don’t understand what is the problem. Is it something with the ESPhome way of handling wifi?
All my other devices (phone, tv) connect to the strongest signal very quickly and remain connected for ever.

I do have one SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz but any other ESP powered devices such as Sonoff switches have no problem connecting and the connection persists for ever.

End point is that whenever the device finally manages to connect it is most often to one of the further access points as you can see below:

not to mention that even after connecting to an access point with strong signal, the connection will be dropped and then connect to a worse one off

Try turning off fast roaming in your Deco advanced settings.

Having mesh network built on Keenetic devices - so far 2 Access Points.
Sometimes ESPHome device establish connection with AP with lower signal.

So far see one possible issue, but not sure.
Your log show same channel (3) utilized on different AP, Keenetic use different channels over network.

I was not aware of 802.11r which @zoogara kindly helped me understand how do turn off on the Deco system. I have done it yesterday but haven’t really seen any change

As far as I have read up on (and explored the Deco settings) it is not possible to manually set the channel on the Deco system, let alone change the channel on individual access points.
TP link has responded in the forum below that using different channels between APs is against the concept of mesh system

A point I forgot to make in my original post was another weird behaviour.
Recently (I could claim that is the case for 2023.12 release) most times I attempt to do OTA, the ESP device disconnects from the network mid update. I have to make multiple attempts over the course of the day to have a successful one.
With the release of 2024.02 I just tried to update a device which was connected to a strong signal (-45dbm) and still the OTA failed as the device disconnected mid update. This is not specific to one device as I did think that maybe the device freezes or something which makes it reboot thus disconnect from the network.

Not sure of the cause of the above issues, but I have an X20, an M9 and four M5 Decos and they work fine. 80+ wi-fi devices about 20 of which are ESPHome and Tasmota.

I honestly don’t know what is wrong. After some suggestions, since my 2.4 and 5GHz bands were under the SSID I tired to separate them and could only do that by using the guest network.
Having realised that the devices on the guest and main networks can’t see each other I reverted back and that seems to have improved things for me.
Now it is either that or the upgrade to ESPHome 2024.2

At this point it is only one device that disconnects (but reconnects faster than before)
