What is the difference and when should I use the one and when the other?

Most users use both. The add-on creates a container where you can view, edit, and debug you node configurations. The integration is how your node devices share their inputs and sensors with home assistant.
It is possible to handle the functions of the add-on using a different computer than where you are running HA.
