ESP's and Sonoff's not connecting to Network

You dont need a USG, that’s just a router/firewall/DHCP server that works with the Unifi controller. You can use your modem/router for that, it just wont show up in the Unifi software.

You do need the Unifi controller software. I thought you were going to use the Ubiqiti Hassio addon? This is how you set up your AP.

Static addresses will be assigned by the DHCP server in your modem/router.

My system consists of three APs connected to a Unifi switch for PoE. The switch connects to an EdgerouterX that handles DHCP and firewalling and dual WAN routing.

I have a cloudkey 1st Gen that I use to provision the APs. This is what you use the Hassio Addon for. Or as linked above, you can run the controller software on any PC.

Using this system I have two separate interfaces. The Edgrouter for assigning addresses and the Unifi controller for provisioning and managing the APs. You will have a similar setup. The Unifi controller software as a Hassio Addon or on a PC, and your modem/router. If you replace your modem with a USG you can do it all in the one place via the Unifi software, but it is not required.

Yes of course, that little forgotten black box the modem.
I have this cheap Netgear DM200 which must be the slowest kit in the world. After many hicups and reboots I finally manged to get it up and I do seem to be able to reserve IP address on there so I think I’m on top of this networking Malarkey!
Could I in theory replace the Netgear modem with the edgerouter.Ubiquity USG?

Thanks for sharing your gear connection layout that helped alot to get the logic clear in my head

It depends on your ISP connection type. The USG isn’t a modem as such. So it will only support Ethernet connections - static ip or DHCP (PPTP or PPPoE) not ADSL / Cable.

Well it’s working ok now and I only have a handfull of devices that have to have static ip so as long as I don’t need to go under the hood of the Netgear modem too often then I should just be able to forget it’s even there. It chugs along nicely once set up, it’s not given me any trouble for years. It’s the all in one routers that keep falling over.

So the Netgear is not an all-in-one device?

Just a modem to connect to the service provider and then you need a router for any wireless action.

Ok. If you connect that to the USG WAN port you can then manage DHCP, static ips as well as managing the AP all from the one UniFi controller interface (hassio addon). The USG has some fancy packet inspection and bandwidth monitoring too.

Just one thing… what are you running hassio on?

It might be a bit much for a raspi.

packet inspection and bandwith monitoring, sounds great, no idea if I need it though. :grimacing:
The netgear modem seems to be capable of reserving IP addresses so it may be all I need. Kind of like your network with the edgerouter, 2 seperate interfaces. Works ok.
I’m running the controller from my laptop at the moment and not the HASSIO which is running on a pi3.
I am moving it over though so it’s always available. I’ve looked into replacing pi with nuc but they seem excessively expensive and I do have an old laptop that I loaded xubuntu on so thinking about changing over to that but its too big a job and finding the time and enthusiasm to do it is a whole other matter.

I used to love the dd-wrt routers because I could have a hard drive connected and use as a NAS for my CCTV, media etc. I’ll have to find something to replace that now. I thought I could use the USB on the UAP AC PRO but it doesn’t look like that works…

bought a controller, the hassio add on is such a faff!
I’m getting some “stack guard” error and migrating it from the PC isn’t working, I don’t have the patience for it… I’m assuming it doesn’t come with a POE adapter so I’ve got one of these too
