Ethernet and Wireless Connection - do I need it?

Hi folks,

I’m new to use Hassio (on my Pi3 b+), and I can’t find a (clear) answer to a question I have.

I’ve seen how to create a static IP for an ethernet connection, and a wireless connection, but in my case, should I have both?

(forgive my ignorance of networks, and I do know that wired is better overall, but…)

My wired network goes to my router, and it hands out IPs in the 192.168.1.x range.

Whereas I use a Google Wifi router, and it hands out IPs as 192.168.86.x

If I enable wifi on the PI (in addition to ethernet), will it ‘discover’ other devices already on my wireless network, such as my nest, harmony, etc., or is it all handled in the general network routing side of things.

Thanks!

No. If you enable both it’s bad networking practice.

No. The individual device MAC address conflicts will probably cause a lot of ignoring and accomplish nothing more than to waste CPU cycles.
Bottom line… not a good idea.

Perfect, thank you both for your replies.
