I’m trying to recreate a fairly hacked together solution with something cleaner and harder for my daughter to rip apart.
I have an electrical panel heater in one room of my house. Last winter it was plugged into a relay controlled by a Beaglebone Black that also had an i2c temperature sensor (which was also my HA host). This was all pretty much hacked together and not pretty, so my daughter (14 months old) found it and ripped all the wires out…oops.
It just got cold here, so I’m trying to do the following:
AC Switched Outlet to turn the heater on/off, looks like a Belkin WeMo (if I want smaller) or Orvibo are my best options. These look pretty simple, though I’m curious if there are any “in-wall” options that I should consider? The Ubiquiti mFi looked interesting, but that seems like a poor product line to buy into right now. I’m fine ripping the existing outlet out and replacing it, and actually do somewhat prefer an in-wall solution if possible (harder for the kid to break!). Would need independent control of the outlets if it were an in-wall solution.
AC powered temperature sensor, I’d love to plug a simple (wifi?) temperature sensor into the second AC outlet next to the heater so I can keep the room at a certain ambient temperature. Like I said, before I was using a BBB and an i2c temperature sensor, worked fine, but I’m now more interested in a polished solution.
Any thoughts?
