Fire safety of Aliexpress electronics

I think a lot of people that are using Home Assistant choose to buy modules from Aliexpress. When it comes to pcb boards I feel quite safe, as these use low current and voltage.

I am thinking about using a modbus thermostat from Aliiexpress. Model BHT-002, the modbus version. There is no brand mentioned, however it is (most probably) produced by Beca Smart. It does seem to meet my demands.

However I am having seconds thoughts about the safety of the product as I don’t think that cheap products from China have high standards as brands like Honeywell. It is an electrical device and will operate continuously, also when nobody around. And off course I want to think about fire safety. It uses 220V as a power source.

Would love to hear the thoughts and experience of others regarding this!

I had a house fire from a shitty doorbell camera (nellys branded). Because of this, I stay away from most low priced crap like this, I always look for UL listed devices. To each his own though, I recognize my scenario was very unique/unlucky.

I just wrote a blog entry on this topic! My personal opinion goes along with @jon102034050 in that I’ll only use UL or ETL listed devices. Low voltage (5 volts) is a different story for me (doorbells are usually low voltage) as many devices don’t bother getting UL listed; I actually can’t recall seeing any low voltage device (power supplies that are line voltage going down to low voltage are hopefully UL listed). Having said that, my new Ryobi cordless drill is UL listed.
