I just did this. I used an Intel NUC7i7bnhq. I tried a couple of different methods and had to rebuild a couple of times. I used Ubuntu Desktop 22.04, Docker and HA. For some reason, portainer was messing me up. But i do have it up. The nuc is overkill, but figured since it, i could run other things off it. Good luck.
Yeah, but your NUC7i7bnhq is a much newer 7th gen CPU. I was more concerned that the old 1st gen was missing some API that would break things.
There is nothing wrong with the i7. I have run Home Assistant on an i3 and i5 NUC. Is there a reason you want to run HA on Docker?
Not really, easier maybe…?
If you plan to only run Home Assistant on an old PC, why complicate it with Docker or other virtualization? Just install the Generic X86 version.
That does mean he can’t use his i7 for anything else though.
Proxmox. Run other stuff easily.
What part of “If you plan to only run Home Assistant” did you miss?
All of it, clearly.
@badfrogg, there is nothing wrong with your i7 for this, the only downside is maybe the power consumption.
Here is a video for reference:
All of the PC processors over the past ten or twenty years have been giving providence to speed, speed and speed. As if speed for running games dictates the design. In fact, all of the PC type magazines highlight how fast the chip runs games. All this comes at an energy cost.
Want to save the climate? Stop playing games.
Home Assistant will run on a Raspberry Pi 2 (though slow. Very slow.) … Any X-86 processor in the past ten or fifteen years is more than sufficient. A Pentium will leave a Pi4 in the dust.
