More of a Half Baked idea rather than a feature request.
I think it might be cool to have a flight sensor in HA. Have notifications when there are delays to a flight or landed, arrived stuff. Useful for Speech notifications.

I would love this, but don’t really want to pay for the API calls each month. Is anyone aware of a flight status API (or a screen scraper) that could get the flight status without having to pay for API calls?
Hi! I think this is a great idea, but I am biased since I work for FlightAware. This is something that I"ve toyed with doing in my spare time. I also have a project on my to-do list to add an Alexa skill for FlightAware. I would not recommend doing this with a screen scraper; it will break if we change web layouts and is also a violation of our terms of service.
@CCOSTAN cool tool, but doesn’t look like it has real time flight status updates. I’m on a plane literally every week, so I’d love to be able to integrate the flight status into my morning announcements on days that I fly.
I still haven’t quite figured out how to get my flight information into home assistant, but I’m toying with either email templating to read the emails I get from the airline (might have to use IFTTT as a proxy) or reading the autopopulated event off of my google calendar.
I’d also like to create alerts for my wife the day I’m coming home so that she automatically gets notified if I’m delayed.
Is there a free tier available for FlightAware? I thought I read that it allows 50 calls per month for free?
It would be great to have a hobbiest tier. Increase market share and mind share with users. Like darksky for weather.
If you run a Raspberry Pi with DTV dongle you get free access to enterprise level service.
Yearly cost is electricity for a pi and whatever data it uses which seems to be minimal.
Mine runs on an old model B without issues
EDIT: update with data usage graph from pfsense
Hi! I’m back and have some news to report on a hobbyist tier. Check this out.
Why not something like TripIt? Imports itinerary and then gives you status of flights. Api available.
Great News @smkelly! Thanks for taking the time to come back and let everyone know! Hopefully a Developer will come along and run with this!
Crazy old thread, but did you ever get something like this working? Looking to implement the same thing.
Anybody ever get anywhere with having a flight status in HA ?
I see HA has an OpenSky option but it doesnt offer much in terms of support or examples ?
All I want to see if flight numbers of planes flying over my house on a map.
Thanks
Martyn
Keen to see if anyone makes progress on this one! I have three planes that I’d like to track. OpenSky doesn’t seem to allow tracking by tail number, which would be awesome!
same this would be great, mt partner and i do alot of flying for work as well.
would be handy to have i guess
Been researching and looking around, doesn’t seem like anyone has made a flight tracker integration yet with HA, there are only ways to track a radius of an area or have ur own ADS-B station to track planes nearby/above you.
