Hi everyone,
I live in an area with poor internet, and I use tado for my heating. I try not to depend on cloud services when I can, but I couldn’t find a local option for my tado thermostats and TRVs, as I found the homekit integration extremely lacking. So I built freedo (with heavy AI help): a local reimplementation of the tado cloud coordinator.
freedo replaces the tado Internet Bridge. A small daemon talks through serial (in the future we hope wifi/bt/etherner) to an ESP32 with a CC1101 868 MHz radio, and Home Assistant controls everything through an add-on and a HACS integration. No tado cloud, no internet connection. Note: the tado app does not work with a system that freedo runs, and that’s to avoid legal trouble with tado and to limit the scope of the project.
It’s still a work in progress, but it’s already heating my home in these first cold days. My goal is the full tado feature set, plus some extras the community came up with over time.
I’d really appreciate help, especially with:
- the dashboard
- the ESP32 firmware
- the PCB: there is a draft board for the transceiver, but it’s heavily AI-assisted and it’s my first PCB ever
Feedback, issues and PRs are all welcome. If you have tado V3+ devices (probably v1,2 and 3 might work too) and want to try it, read the Status section in the README first: it’s experimental, so keep a way to control your heating by hand or just switch over some thermostats/trvs for testing the waters.
