Fresh Linux Hass.io installation - Recommendations?

I’m planning to move from Hass.io on a Pi to Hass.io on a docker container on an x86 machine running a fresh Linux distro install. I’ve currently got Ubuntu 18.04 running on it.

What are your recommendations for which distro to use and any other key set up characteristics before installing Hass.io? Any gotchas?

Thanks

I used an Ubuntu cloud image running in hyper-v (but feel free to use any hypervisor)

Then just follow the steps for install hass.io and away you go!

Hass.io updates itself (the “supervisor”) and Home Assistant, so all you have to do is setup automatic updates for Ubuntu and you should be all set!

Thanks, @mike1237. Are you running in hyper-v on Windows by chance? I’m planning to start with a totally fresh install of Linux on the hardware. Or, am I missing something?

Thanks for the Ubuntu auto update tip.

I use Debian and then install docker and then the generic Linux install for Hassio. Ubuntu was my original intention but some guys on the Discord support recommended Debian for stability. Hasn’t missed a beat here.

Thanks, @DavidFW1960. Do you use unattended-upgrades with Debian? If so, have you seen an impact on stability?

Hyper-V is Microsoft’s hypervisor and only runs on Windows.

I don’t. I just run apt-get update and dist-upgrade every week or so via ssh. It’s totally stable.
