Hello!
I just bought and installed a couple of Frient smoke detectors (SMSZB-120). So far no problems, integrating them into my ZHA network went just fine, entities are discovered, operative etc. Still, reading the documentation left me with some questions which somebody might already have answered, at least for himself.
First of all the scenario I imagine in case of a fire: Smoke is detected in one room, setting off the alarm there. All the other detectors start screaming too, but only for some time, let’s say ten seconds - enough to wake everyone everywhere up, after that they stop in order to let us hear which detector continues beeping, thus indicating which room the fire is in. Whether this can be achieved by monitoring the (HA) smoke detection sensor entities and activating the other detectors’ sirens through an automation or (again by automation) deactivating the sirens of the other detectors after a certain time would be my first question. Has anyone any experience here?
Second: As far as I understand the docs, the smoke detectors communicate between themselves over the Zigbee network. The test routine for this is described as “A network alarm test can be performed by holding down the alarm button for at least 6.5 seconds […] A test message will be sent over the Zigbee network”. I thought that meant that after 6.5 seconds the other detectors would start beeping too, but that didn’t happen. So here my question is, what happens in the case of a real fire? Will all detectors be beeping then or is there again just a message over the Zigbee-Network? Is there a way to catch this message?
Of course I could test this using real smoke by burning some paper or using a test spray, but I’d like to leave that as plan B, since I worry about polluting the sensors and damaging the detecor. So, if anyone has some experience to share, I’d be grateful.
