Starting to amass equipment for frigate. Just picked up a coral and an odyssey blue and trying to figure out the networking portion of it; I don’t see it in the documentation.
Do the cameras plug into the camera server or just somewhere to the network where they can be accessed via IP? Either way, looks like I’m going to need another switch.
Where is the storage located? Am I using the server’s (odyssey’s) storage or my storage (I use the mariadb addon and have it connected to my NAS, so storage is not an issue), just want to know how it works.
Does anyone have experience with WiFi cameras? I know it’s not recommended due to disconnects, but there are a few places where I just don’t see it’s possible. I’m having to reengineer camera locations due to the wired limitations.
One more thing - and for the record - I got the Odyssey from Seeed Studio and it was USED! I emailed them and am waiting for a reply, but it’s very clearly used. Scratches on the plastic face, items unwrapped, box torn, the packing material on the side of the box, not wrapping the odyssey.
I don’t know what they’re goign to do to compensate yet, but I’m not happy.
Depends what you want to do, it is not in the frigate documentation because it is subjective and unrelated to frigate itself.
Again, it is up to you and how you set it up
WiFi cameras can work well, it really depends on the WiFi connection as well as the camera itself. Crappy WiFi cameras (wyze) won’t work as well as a good WiFi camera for example.
Thank you for the clarification on my questions. I had planned on going with the Dahua cameras, as recommended, where possible, and it looks like what I want to do may be possible, but it would be far easier with WiFi.
Either way, knowing that there is a way forward just in case is good news.
Found this post while looking for the answer to my question. I have a camera that used to be connected by WIFI, in an attempt to speed up my system, I now have the cam connected directly to the router. I can find it on VLC, but now HA doesn’t seem to recognize it…
So you can log in to the camera using its IP address on a browser, right? If so, what type of camera is it? I have amcrest cameras and i’m using the Dahua integration to display cameras and I have a Frigate server that’s doing the behind-the-scenes smartypants stuff.
You don’t need Frigate to just display the cameras, but you will need to be able to access the camera via a browser or via 554 (RTSP) to transfer the data.
