From Raspberry to Linux

Hi there,

I’ve been running HA over Raspberry Pi 3+ (more or less) flalessly. I would love to move my setup to a new larger machine running Ubuntu Server LTS, as to be able to run a Roon Server from that same machine as well.

Which is the best (I should say easiest, maybe) way to move from Raspberry Pi 3+ to Linux?? I would really appreciate your input.

Cheers,

MO

If you run Ubuntu, you only have 2 choices : in a venv (HA Core) or in Docker (HA Container). HA Supervised is not supported on Ubuntu, and will be in an unhealthy state in no time.

But a quick google shows roon server runs fine on Debian, in which case you run supervised too.

(Btw : your Pi3+ runs linux too)

The third choice is to run HAOS in a VM, which is probably the better option.

Or proxmox …

proxmox IS a vm….

Thank you all. I understand/know the options available… I was actually wondering which option is the better/easier to follow.

Is the Supervised version the better option?? Don’t mind running Debian!

I know Pi3+ supports linux - another one running Linux at home as well. I’m looking for a powerful NUC as to be able to run full DSP on Roon.

Thanks again. Cheers!

I’d say that Home Assistant Operating System VM is the better one, its a Supervised version so has the most amount of options.

It’s easy to create VM snapshots before upgrades or big changes. Also if you backup the .vdi or .vmdk file it’s easy to migrate or even quickly move to another hardware in case of DR.

I ran a VirtualBox VM on an Ubuntu Server (could be a Debian as well). I set it up to start the VM on start up, works like a charm and shares box with several other vm servers.

Even if you doubt about Linux; I run HyperV on Windows10.
But VirtualBox and VMWare work just as well :+1:t4:

Supervised is the opposite of easy.

Easy is HAOS in a VM. Slightly harder is Container (aka HA in Docker).

It does sound that the option to follow is HAOS in a VM. Will start working on this then.

Thank you very much, everyone!

I know people say that, but it is not really true IMHO.

Following copy and pastable instructions is easy. It is the definition of easy.

Once it is installed via those easy to follow instructions it is consumer easy, I love the addons.

There’s also a great chart in the installation notes that summarize the different types of installations

You’re assuming that’s easy. Given how often people get this wrong, or ignore the requirements and get into trouble, it is continually demonstrated to be far from easy.

Yeah I do grant you that, but how hard can copy & paste be?

Well…a lot of people never went to kindergarten……

Hi Guys!

Hope everyone is well. Is Virtualbox really this easy??? Two clicks, and you’re up and running? Impressive to say the least.

Any special consideration I should be taking when running from VB??

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers!

When Windows reboots VBox won’t restart by default. There’s information out there about how to do that.

Thanks! I will be using Linux, I think. But nevertheless.

Hi!
It won’t auto start either by default, you’ll have to follow these steps: https://kifarunix.com/autostart-virtualbox-vms-on-system-boot-on-linux/
