I have 5 Google "Nest mini" speakers around the house running on the old "Google Assistant"
When I open the "Google Home APP" on my Android Smartphone it often ask me to update to "Gemini for Home"
Until now I always declined the update as I saw that is not possible to roll back to "Google Assistant" and also read that a lot of people are not happy with "Gemini for Home"
I have "Google Assistant" integration set up trough Manual setup (if you don’t have Home Assistant Cloud) and I hope someone with the same setup that already updated to "Gemini for Home" could answer some question.
does casting from HomeAssistant to the Nest speaker still work?
does the "ehi google sync my devices" still works?
is still possible launch a scene or a script telling "ehi google launch test"
is still possible in the the "Google Home APP" create a routine with [when I say "test" then tell assistant to run "launch test"]
for example I have a routine that when I say "ehi google how are the temperature at home" it tells to Google Assistant "launch temperature script" (that he sees as a scene) and it trigger the script that announce all the room temperatures in the Nest speaker that prompted the script (trough Google Cast).
or another routine that when I say "ehi google transfer music to dinner room" tells to Google Assistant "launch transfer music dinner room script" and it trigger the script that using Music Assistant transfer the music from a Nest speaker to the other.
@Sir_Goodenough why you tagged this as a "Configuration" question?
It's not a configuration issue. It's already configured, up and working.
I'm asking if someone has any clue if the new "Gemini for Home" is compatible with the way we used until now "Google Assistant" (sync my devices, activate scene, voice routine to activate scene) in HomeAssistant.
The Google Assistant integration is a core integration, so the questions are better found here by people that want to help with those and configuration category is for core based stuff. Third Party is for Custom Integrations and Apps outside of core.
But if you want to change it back, go ahead, I won't stop you or change it again.
Gemini for Home has worked well in my household. It's occasionally more chatty on short commands which is irritating, but most of the time I appreciate the natural language use.
I also use Google Assistant in Home Assistant and it hasn't broken anything for me.
I can play music etc on my speakers via Music Assistant easily
Yes but it must be said by the google home admin
Yes but I've never managed to get it to actually do it when I ask it to so can't help!
I keep saying no. I’ve seen no sign that Gemini helps anything it just makes it more confused (not confusing - confused) trying to figure out what you meant rather than just doing what you said.
My phone (which I think uses Gemini) for example no longer can “Close the garage door” because it now thinks “close” must refer to an app. Now I have to “lower” the garage door but some of the time it thinks I mean the light and that dims. Sigh…
And (pretty sure it was the phone) i was trying to close a water valve to the house and ended up (without knowing what it did) turning off the hot water heater. Got a cold shower a couple days later before I found it.
I want an assistant that does what I said – or does nothing.
I didn’t have the courage to update to “Gemini for Home” at the risk of breaking my setup and decided to stick with “Google Assistant.”
Also asked on Reddit (here), and a user replied that he had some issue with the “vocal routine”, but he solved using “Google Home script editor” on the home.google.com webpage (see here)
