Getting started with new zigbee network & devices

Hello,

I have no experience and want to start my home automation project the right way, so that I have:

  • a reliable system
  • that allows expansion
  • and is not prone to a hardware vendor lock-in

I plan to run Home Assistant on an Intel NUC.
I am fine with Linux and Python, but totally noob on devices side.

My initial devices would be just:

  • temperature and humidity sensor
  • Remotely controlled power sockets (schuko type in EU/RO)

I’ve notice there’s not much hope to integrate my legacy Uponor Wireless thermostats), probably some hope to integrate my DSC alarm system. But I’ll leave these for another post.

Anyhow, my difficulties are:

  • how to choose a zigbee vendor. I assume it make sense to choose a vendor with a wide area of reliable dongles, instead of ending with 10 vendors and possible incompatibilities
  • what components do I need for a zigbee network

I’m under the assumption that I need zigbee, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Thank you

Zigbee, Z-Wave or a combination of both. I have both. I have found Zigbee to be easier and more reliable for some reason… I don’t really know why. I am slowly migrating off Z-Wave and all additions default to Zigbee.
My fav Zigbee hub is a Conbee-2 usb stick. Nortek makes a nice combo Zigbee/Z-Wave stick also if you want both. Wink sux.
