Good open source alternatives for Tuya/SmartLife RGBW controller

Hello together,

during the last few weeks/months, I got more and more disappointed with my Tuya smart home devices. We have 19 devices we use through the HACS in Home Assistant. Every view weeks, one of the device receives for what ever reason a new local key, and I’m forced to change it again. Of course, my Tuya cloud trial subscription expired, and I have to go the bluestack old app way, to read out the new local key.

I really like the Tuya devices, because the hardware never really disappointed me, but the locked software is a bummer.

Shelly is also part of our smart home and right now my choice for new devices, because of the great integration in HA.

One of my biggest problems are our 10 RGBW controller, I use them for many background illuminations and also to control the RGB stripes in our kitchen.

Therefore, I use this device:

It’s the perfect controller for me, because of the 6A per channel. Shelly has an alternative (https://www.shelly.com/de/products/shelly-plus-rgbw-pm?srsltid=AfmBOoqNkEFEqCxMJON03DXxUiKQUVMmN4WymVleQpyttZPLbnDp7_me) but based on the specs, it can’t compete with the other model (only 4A per channel max). At some places I use 4–5 A per channel and I don’t want to max out the specifications. Also, it does no look good, when I have to mount the controller on the back of a monitor or so.

I know, I can flash the Tuya devices with Tuya Convert, but to be honest, that’s not my preferred solution and I do really not like Tuya. ESPHome is my solution of choice in such cases, I already use it for some POE ESP32 in our house, and it works great.

So, is there any other brand which offers great “open source” hardware which can easily be included into HA without any work around and also offers similar specs? Shelly can’t be the only solution?

Thanks for your answers

Athom sells led controllers pre-flashed with Tasmota and WLED, but I don’t know if they meet your power requirements. Other brands like Martin Jerry, CloudFree, Kauf, and Kincony are selling devices pre-flashed open source firmware, but no LED controllers I am aware of. (Personally, I use a Zooz ZEN31 Z-wave controller, providing 6A per channel, but they have been out of stock for months — are LED controllers just not as popular as they used to be?)

The MiBoxer WL5 you linked to (at least recently) had a WBR3 (RTL8720c) module which appears to be supported by esphome now — I have over 30 formerly-Tuya devices running Tasmota or ESPhome now and find that flashing them is usually straightforward and 100% worth the effort, particularly if your requirements force you to dig into the extended selection offered by the Tuya ecosystem.

Can I check the chip model without opening the device?
