Google travel time what time is right?

I’ve started using the Google Travel Time integration, and have a question regarding what the right time is as I’m geting some odd results.

As you can see it says the Duration is 16 mins, but the time in traffic is 20 mins. How can that be, if the travel time is less?

Am I supposed to add the two together, or just use the time in traffic value?

Duration is the ignoring current traffic conditions, here’s how long it’ll take

Duration in traffic is taking traffic conditions into account.

So yes, if there was nobody else around it’d take you 16 minutes, but with all the others on the road it’ll take you 20. That seems quite plausible.

Ok that makes sense, was a little hard to work out as comparing on Google maps was different again, was saying 25 mins, so half way in-between.

Will update my automation with that information, thank you

Hey @seanmccabe how did you get the mode? Does it change from driving if your not driving?

No, I’ve got it set to driving (this is set when you configure the sensor).
Cant change it like that.
You can setup multiple sensors though, and have a walking one or one of the other options, but it is based on two fixed co-ordinates.

Ohhh, I thought it was a sensor that sensed if you were driving or not. Thats what my wife wants.

I already have my time to home, lets say its 41 minutes. But when she looks at it, she doesnt know if I am stationary or driving. I thought maybe this could tell her I was driving.

There are various other ways to figure that out. For example if you have android auto, you companion app can tell you if your phone is connected to the car, and thus driving.

I’m not positive, but I think there may also be a way to determine how fast your phone is moving. You could infer from the speed that you are not walking.

There is an activity sensor your phone can send.
I use this to put up a little badge of a car when driving.
If you connect to BT in your car can make a sensor to do the same thing.
