GPS location timeline capturing similar to Google Maps

I find the Google maps timeline feature very useful.

There are a couple of issues with it thought.

  • One is that it requires one to share the location.
  • The other is that while previously you could load your timeline in the browser now it is accessible only on the phone.

So it would be amazing if HA could record the timeline

Use “hour_to_show” option in a stock Map card to show a timeline.

Use the companion app instead

I have to admit I was not aware of this option but nevertheless this is far from what I am looking for.
It connects the gps points without taking into account the road layout.

Considering what is possible this is basic at least.

What do you mean?
The companion app exposed the phone location to Home Assistant. That’s about it.

Yes. It’s more reliable than Google maps

So, you want a track created on fake artificial data.

I am looking for exact the same function in HA. Can anyone help please?

Use high accuracy and it will follow the roads.

Currently, Google Timeline is no longer available on PC, which is very frustrating. I would really like it if there were a way to have this integrated within Home Assistant without add-ons.

A very stupid decision imho.

Btw, a custom map card has a possibility to show a track for a defined period “start - end”, not just to last XXX hours like a stock map card.
So, the only question is “am I ready to keep data in DB for last 365 days”.
Having myself 2 months in DB, so can build track for any period within this interval.

Using myself Traccar. Could be a self-hosted server, could be a shared demo server.
Very reliable service.
Although since 2024.5 a corresponding “Traccar server” integration was broken and no hope it will be fixed soon since the author ignores issues on GitHub.
As for Companion App - have a negative experience, am my 3 devices keep stopping updating data. Could be an iOS issue though.
