HA Green Questions

I have a couple of questions about Home Assistant Green (HAG) that I’m not seeing addressed.

  1. What OS is HAG running? I’m currently running in my ASUS NAS, so in a Docker container. I’d like to run in HA OS so that I get HACS and Add-on support. Does HAG run HA OS?

  2. Can I import my current configuration from a container to HA OS so that I don’t have to reconfigure everything?

Thanks,
Alan

I believe the answer to both your questions is, yes.

Home Assistant OS

HACS works on all methods. Add-ons however are only possible on HAOS.

For Home Assistant, yes. For other software, no.

Just take a backup and restore it on the new install.

Thanks. You said HACS works on all installations. I didn’t think it worked on a Docker installation.

HACS Will work in general but Add-ons will not work in a Docker installation.

HACS is a custom integration, not an add-on.

Add-ons are other software that run outside of Home Assistant. Integrations are part of HA and either connect HA to software/services, or provide functionality inside HA.

Q for a total noob here: what does this mean for using HACS to add things on that I can’t find in standard searches for add-ons? I did something to add “get HACS” and I keep starting it, but it appears to be stopping right away.

Did you read https://hacs.xyz/docs/use/download/download/#to-download-hacs?

As another total noob with HA I see articles that have instructions based on which OS is being used. In that list I see HA OS and I see Core (among others). However, on my HA Green unit I go to Settings → About and I see the following:

Does this mean the HAG is running HA OS, Core or some combination of both? On my system there is no “config” folder but rather “homeassistant” in File Editor.

HAOS - hence the Operating System line.

Everybody runs the software called Core, which is unfortunately the same name as one of the install methods.

There were changes some time last year (I think) that changed how some add-ons saw /config - that’s one of them.

@Tinkerer Thank you so much for the answers. I just went in and ran a terminal session and I see that it appears that the “config” folder is an alias to the “homeassistant” folder. Is that right?

That’s my understanding (I don’t use HAOS).
