HA keeps restarting as soon as i access the mobile app

Hey all

New User here… using HA on a Raspberry Pi4 for about 1-2 weeks now and created some basic automations (lights, blinds…).

Since yesterday afternoon, HA always restarts as soon as i access the mobile app and sometimes as well if i connect to the frontend via the web interface. It always says: Connection lost, reconnecting.

I first thought it is might due to the SD Card, but i changed them, installed HA new and restored it from the backup, and finally grabbed an old SSD but still, the problem remains…

Funny thing is, the automations work in the background - it crashes only if i access it…

Any tips or inputs where to check whats causing this issue?

Thanks!

In your configuration directory there will be a file called home-assistant.log.1 this is the log from before the last restart. It may have some clues.

Are you using any custom cards or other frontend resources?

I’m using the frontend resources, so the basic one. I installed bubble cards but haven’t used it.

One thing i noticed right know is, that HA restarts, as soon as im in the tab “Overview”… i can access the automations, tools and everything, but keeps crashing as soon as i switch over to overview.

Will check the log.

Interesting. Does it crash completely?

i.e. do your automations stop working?

Have you taken control of your dashboard and customised it?

If so, how much customisation have you done?

Would you mind deleting it and starting again?

One thing to try: Try restarting in safe mode, Developer Tools → YAML → Restart → Advanced Options

Is it stable when you do this?

Yes, this message appears: Connection lost, try reconnecting. Then it starts again.

I did some slightly customisation but not much really. Automation stop completely, i notice that because the lights and shutters will not be accessable via the Home App from apple.

The Raspberry is connected via LAN to my main router and otherwise i connect all devices with wifi through a mesh system - could that be an issue? I might just restart all devices to see if that helps…

Or could it be a power issue from raspberry? I read that somewhere else…

What do you mean by deleting it and start again? Whole HA?

Nope just your dashboard, that is what seems to be badly corrupted. You can start that again.

I have never heard of a frontend issue like this causing the backend to crash.

I doubt it is a power issue as this could happen at any time, not when you access the dashboard. There will also be warning in the log file if this is the case.

How did you go starting in safe mode?

Yes I think its not the dashboard which causes the issue, tried to start in safe mode but crashed again… will shortly restart the raspberry and see if that gets me access to safe mode afterwards…

So, im in safe mode now after a restart… what are the next steps?

Look at your Overview, does it crash?

Nope, stable… no crashing at all… so its not the dashboard… and it looks like “before” - i notice that, because the sonos speakers show a background screen of the music i was playing before… this wasn’t the case before when it crashes

Ok, that’s good news. Safe mode disables all third party integrations and frontend resources.

Unfortunately HACS is a third party integration. So if you used that to add the bubble card you cant use it to remove it while in safe mode. You have two options:

  1. Restart into normal mode and hope you can get to HACS to remove the bubble card. or

  2. Navigate to Settings → Dashboards → Three dot icon (top right) → Resouces and delete the bubble card link then restart. Then remove it from HACS.

And hope that this is the cause. It could still be another resource… :crossed_fingers:

Ok i will try to remove it. I have HACS and installed some integrations like Dreame, Loxone (for the shades)… so my best bet would be just remove one by one to see what causes the issue?

Start with the frontend things. Like bubble card, or other 3rd party cards you use. It seems to be dashboard related.

Removed Bubble Card and the Tapo integration and now (for now) it works stable as before  thank you very much! Hope it stays that way, otherwise will get in touch again.

Damn - still crashes. I opened the mobile app to check if it works again with the mobile app but it crashed, same issue… anything related to mobile app integration? I am using a Nabu Casa account right now to access HA on the go… if that helps…

Also what i just noticed right now is, that it seems to work, occassionally reconnecting, but the controls (as example light) is extremly slow via the app…

Logs please.

I suspect something is using up all your memory. Do you monitor this with the system monitor integration?

CPU utilisation and RAM use are good to monitor.

I have it on, yes. Usage ist 3112.6 / free: 676.1 right now, CPU Temp at 67…

How can i provide you with the logs?

Might have located the issue… i deleted a HACS, Xiaomi MAP integration, now the mobile app works normally… maybe that caused the issue…

There’s a download full logs link on the Settings → System → Logs page. Copy then paste here.

Tom I’m seeing something similar m but I’m at a convention and don’t have time to test until I get home.

Open companion and boom. Then reconnect. - I ALSO see this in browser (mostly Edge. Chromium based browsers) so I’m not looking at the companion. I’m pretty sure something os tossing a ton of data at the FE and it gets overwhelmed and drops.

I haven’t been able to trace it down yet. But I’ve seen it in both my main dash (very custom mostly button card, and mushroom) but I’ve also seen it when trying to review the entity list (im well past 9k entities now and aboitn120 labels - I’m filtering on label by default)

The backend doesn’t crash. It appears to be just FE.

I also have bubble card installed but I do not have the card loaded in a dashboard.

It started sometime around 2024.10.x and has become progressively worse throughout the last few builds. To the point chasing it down was going to be this weekends work.

As to my rig, HAOS on Nuc10. Running about 20% memory and quite well behaved. Nothing special.
