HA Port Forwarding

I have just replaced my ISP router with a Netgear Nighthawk and when I’ve set it up for using my HA instance I believe I’m supposed to forward the device port to 8123? Is that correct?

This is what I’ve done in my router advanced settings. Can anyone please advise if I’ve done it correctly? I’m also unsure FTP is the correct service to use but it defaulted to that.

Do I need to do anything else regarding security as I’ve read various posts saying that forwarding ports is unsafe? Or is that scare-mongering?

Yes, it’s my first time port forwarding

The service name is irrelevant, so don’t worry about that.

Port forwarding is neither safe nor unsafe. It’s just exposing a service to the Internet. It’s what you do with that service that determines if it’s safe, or not.

  1. Use SSL
  2. Ensure you’re using strong passwords
  3. Keep HA up to date
  4. Consider enabling MFA on all accounts that can log in remotely

Thanks for the advice @Tinkerer

I’ll take a look into using SSL and see how that goes.

If you haven’t read it already, do read the securing checklist.
