HA Slows Down or Refuses to Respond

Hi All,

I’ve been experiencing slowness on the UI for ages, and more recently I find that the system completely stops responding and at other times may be quite responsive. I’ve been seeing the error “Supervisor - Unable to fetch add-on info to start Ingress” pop up on screen when attempting to open components such as NodeRed, Glances, etc as shown in the errors below.

I thought initially it might have been due to running on a Pi4 with limited resources however for the past 6 months or so the system has been running on an old i7 laptop with SSD drive and plenty of available memory.

I’ve disabled a number of add-ons, and trimmed down what is being logged to just a couple of sensors however this doesn’t appear to have fixed the issue.

Last night for example, all was running really smoothly after trying a “supervisor repair” until this morning when the slowness and unresponsiveness appeared again.

Just now, I ran another supervisor repair and immediately the system came up responsive again. Needing some serious assistance to solve these issues once and for all.

Is anyone on the forums nowadays?

I think nobody will respond unless you provide more information like:

Hardware
HA installation type and versions
Logs for the issues you are experiencing
Any uncommon configuration of your HA instance

OK, it’s difficult to know what to post if one doesn’t know what to post, mainly the reason Ive posted what I have, but ok.

Hardware: As above, i7 laptop with 8Gb of memory
HA Install:

  • Core2023.12.1
  • Supervisor2023.11.6
  • Operating System11.2
  • Frontend20231208.2

Logs: As above, as I don’t yet know which logs would actually be useful.
There is not much uncommon about the HA instance, this question probably needs to be clarified as I’m sure no two instances are alike apart from maybe a handful of addons.

Happy to provide any additional logs or info as required, but am interested whether anyone has experienced similar.

Cheers,
Paul

Below are the supervisor logs, tried:

  1. supervisor reload: No change
  2. supervisor restart: No change
  3. Supervisor repair: All containers responsive again.

Can you confirm if you are running a bare metal install of HAOS (HA OS).

Can you also confirm if your laptop is LAN connected using WiFi or Ethernet.

I would guess either a RAM or disk/file corruption issue for supervisor to go into repair mode.

Try a full backup, then fresh reinstall making certain you check your disk and possibly RAM for integrity, then restore.

If you are running on SSD (instead of HDD) you have enough power to go the virtualisation route, and I would suggest Proxmox. Using a VM is much easier to troubleshoot, repair, backup and restore HAOS, even have two HAOS instances one for test the other for production.

Hi, Supervisor didn’t go into repaitr mode, I kicked it off intentionally. The virtualization path sounds interesting though. I can say with certainty that there are no memory issues or disk issues at this point, so would still be good to get to the bottom of things before jumping too far down the virtualization path.

Your system uses WiFi or RJ45 to connect?

Where do you experience the slow down?
In the App on your Phone, or does it also happen in the Browser?
The browser usually works perfectly fine for me, but the app needs a force close from time to time in my case to keep working snappy.

I use a hard-wired connection, not a fan of wifi unless I don’t have a choice.
The slowdown is across the board when it happens. It will affect the UI and back end. I do notice that it seems to really affect anything running in a container like the following rather than some of the built-in functions like Calendar for example.

When it slows down, I get the error “Supervisor - Unable to fetch add-on info to start Ingress ” when trying to access any of the add-ons.

It’s a bit hard to pin down, but it does seem to operate correctly after rebuilding the supervisor as I did this afternoon. For example, yesterday, all was working fine for a few days until I updated the HA Core to 2023.12.1 from the previous version (I do keep up with all updates). As soon as the system came up, it ran like a dog. After a couple of restarts and supervisor rebuilds, it was all good, so not actually proving anything.

Cheers,
Paul
