HA unreachable as from (each) Sunday

I’ve HA runnning on a RBPI 4 with an M2 SSD connected to it via USB.
It ran smoothly for over a year.
Last week Sunday, it became unreachable and also (partly) unresponsive:

  • Web interface is not accessible anymore
  • Automations do not trigger anymore
  • (some?) add-ons keep on working (like MQTT, because I can verify that from outside HA)
  • I can still ping the device

After rebooting, I can access the web interface for ~10 seconds and then it doesn’t respond anymore (it times out after several minutes waiting).
Last week, I tried rebooting it several times without succes. Until Friday evening, after a reboot everything seemed totally fine again. I have even upgraded it to the latest HA version without any issue. Saturday it worked fine as well.

And then Sunday again, since yesterday it shows the same behaviour as last week.

  • Web interface is not accessible anymore
  • Automations do not trigger anymore
  • (some?) add-ons keep on working (like MQTT, because I can verify that from outside HA)
  • I can still ping the device

I have no clue for this. Where should I look for? I don’t have automations running (only) on Sunday. Add-ons do not update automatically.
What can I do to get HA up and running again and how can I find out what’s going wrong?

I managed to get SSH access. The CLI is working fine… anyone has an idea where I should start looking to get the web interface up and running again?

And it’s Sunday again…
Last week I’ve completely reinstalled HA and restored my backup. Since today it’s unreachable again. I can’t access it via SSH, nor via the web interface.

:frowning: :frowning:

Does anybody has an idea what could go wrong here?

Have you tried to attach a monitor and keyboard direct to your HA device, to see if your can access the web UI there ? … or CLI

EDIT: As you provide no logs, i guess you haven’t looked there, in your “analyzes” , but would be a good idea, also(in worse case enable Debug), to get additional tracing of what’s going on , in HA … could be as simple as a network issue, but with the lack of info anyone would only be able to “speculate”

I checked the logs last week before I did a clean install. Nothing special there.

Attaching a monitor is a good idea. What kind of logs should I look for?

A network issue is not the case. Since I can access HA directly after the reboot through the web interface for few seconds. And I can still ping it. And the health page is working as well.

I attached a monitor and also rebooted the system. Now SSH is working…

Last week after the reinstall, observer showed all green, now this is the result:

I didn’t see it as part of your troubleshooting, but have you tried a different install drive?

I had issues with a PiHole which worked fine right up until it didn’t.

It would load so far run for a bit then stop.
I suspected a corrupt/failed drive, replaced it with a new boot one and it’s been 100% since.

It’s an M2 SSD which is few months old. Shouldn’t I see drive errors somewhere if there is something wrong with the drive?

As it’s happening on the same day, its as though there’s a scheduled background process that’s either corrupting something or maybe causing the Pi to struggle with excessive consumption or lack of power or overheating the unit.

You’ve already removed corruption in the software by reinstalling (assuming there wasn’t anything in your backup causing issues).
Next step would be to start small/cheap and work your way up

If possible, format the SSD and run some diagnostics on it to make sure it’s healthy.
For hardware, try a different power supply/cable, drive, an alternate Pi (if you have one).

It would also worth trying a vanilla install of HA with a couple basic automations running to see if it’s stable over a couple weeks which would validate if your current setup is a root cause

Sorry, that’s probably not ideal, but hopefully might give some ideas and hopefully you get it back to 100% again soon.

Seems something is causing it to end up in the state “unhealthy” ,…, start by disabling “google-drive” backup, and some other “potential” customizations loaded by configuration.yaml , such as things you see in HOST/Supervisor log , which seems to struggling with the network

when you are at it, change Logger: from info to Debug

I’ts more like some configurations, than a “harddisk” failure … so start with disabling your backup ( hardly no need for it currently anyway
PS: and if you haven’t followed up on latest upgrades for awhile, you should even try to “commend out” what ever you can in configuration.yaml , as a-lot lately has become a part of core, or intergration/YAML, and therefore should be removed from configuration.yaml … and im pretty sure that what i see is not the full startup-log, you would see that under /Configuration/Settings/Logs

EDIT i assume that above ip is allowed in your network settings, thou SSL and/ or (i.e D-DuckDns) and anyone of your Custom-Add-Ons could be part of the “unhealthy” state, i.e eBUS doesn’t seems like a “stable” to run

I tried stopping the addons, but I figured out that HA is restarting automatically every few minutes, and thus the addons are started again.
@boheme61 Do you know a way to disable autostart from addons through the CLI? If I read the docs correctly, I can only stop them.

I installed all updates within a week after they came available and I didn’t install something new (weeks) before this started happening.

In Regards to the Add-Ons you can stop them in Configuration/Add-Ons, there you can also … prevent auto-start(during system boot) of the add-ons, in Cli you can do a-lot with addons, thou seems like disable autostart is not 1 of them , type " ad -h "

Why HA is restarting i don’t know, but you can also type "resolution healthcheck " not that i think it would say much.

PS: in CLI you can type -h after each command ( i.e " su op -h "

But again, check your configuration.yaml, and commend-out things there that might be related to the errors/integrations

Some of the errors you show here, are mentioned in several Topics in the Forum, thou i don’t know whether those will “apply” to your situation

EDIT: And i would also change Logger ( in configuration.yaml ) from Info > Debug , so you getmore info in regards to why it’s restarting, and also whether some integration/configuration causes the instability

… and the minute you get access to UI, go to /Add-ons, and disable Auto-Start on boot ( on each Add-ons That causes erros MQTT,eBUS etc., and check your configuration.yaml, change to Debug, and commend-out references to same integrations and other custome-parts that not required for a “startup” and reboot system again
i.e " commend-out automations in configuration.yaml is also worth a try, if you know you have a lot automation-scripts

PS: Also as you have some “problems” in HOST log i would make sure that i not just “restart” HA but Reboot Host every time, whether the errors in HOST.log is due to network or corrupt-file issues i don’t know … your HOST-log is very different from mine, as i run Homeassistant OS, in VMware-image

Hm options does seem to be missing from the cli for addons. It think it’s because POST /addons/{slug}/options also accepts the options provided by the addon on the configuration tab in addition to the check boxes on the first tab. Would be impossible to enumerate out all possible inputs like the other options ones in the cli.

However you can still do it from the command line, just a bit more difficult. There is a rest API, as I noted the one you want is POST /addons/{slug}/options. You can hit that using curl. I think if you just post this as the body you should be good {"boot":"manual"}. I am a little worried that will wipe out your addons configuration though. You can either provide that too or just use the cli to get info for each addon and save that to a file. So you can come back and recover it later when things are working.

Last bit is you will need authentication to hit this API with curl. Since you are somewhere with access to the cli the supervisor access token should be in an environmental variable called SUPERVISOR_TOKEN.

So in the end your curl call should look something like this:

curl -X POST \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $(printenv SUPERVISOR_TOKEN)" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"boot":"manual"}' \
  http://supervisor/addons/core_mariadb/options

I did just type all that out on my phone so if there’s a typo I’m sorry. But hopefully it’s close enough you can take it from there.

I’ve managed to disable all add-ons. It didn’t change a thing.
Which logs should I be looking at? core? supervisor? host?

Configuration/settings/logs , and did you enabled Debug ? and restart
how does your configuration.yaml looks like ?
which errors do you see now ?

EDIT: i don’t mean restart, but host-Reboot

I managed to find the cause…

HA freezes after this line in the log. If you want long enough, HA restarts automatically.
If I disable this integration (GitHub - rgc99/irrigation_unlimited: ♒Irrigation controller for Home Assistant), HA functions normally.

Question remains: what’s wrong here. And why did it cause issues out of the blue?

Great to hear you finally found the root-cause ,

I wouldn’t say “out of the Blue” , beside it’s a very “complex” custom integration, that would lead to problems if your not totally aware of what it’s depended upon, other thing is … You never said when you installed 2022.4, or whether you’ve done some other changes(or updates) in your HA

Before the first incident I didn’t perform updates (nor to HA, nor to addons). After I got HA up again I’ve upgraded to 2022.4.

I’ve used that integration without any issues for over a year => that’s the context for “out of the blue”
