HA Voice | WIFI Connection Issue

The Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition (HAV PE) device is unable to connect to the home Wi-Fi network, which is a dedicated IoT network running on 2.4GHz. I followed the standard connection steps via the Home Assistant Companion app. However, during the process, the device repeatedly asks for physical button authorization and remains stuck on “Connecting.” Ultimately, the connection fails with an “Unable to Connect” error after several attempts.

Network Setup

  • Router: Ubiquiti UniFi UDM Pro
  • Access Point: UniFi U7 Pro
  • IoT Wi-Fi Network: Dedicated 2.4GHz-only network for IoT devices (separate SSID from main network)

Steps Taken to Reproduce

  1. Bluetooth Setup: Connected to the HAV PE via Bluetooth using the Home Assistant Companion app on my phone.
  2. Wi-Fi Credentials: Selected “Add” in the app and entered the IoT network’s SSID and password.
  3. Authorization Prompt: The HAV PE device prompted for the physical button press authorization (pairing confirmation) and I pressed the button as instructed.
  4. Connecting Stage: The device showed a “Connecting” status but did not progress, then asked for button authorization again after timing out.
  5. Repeated Attempts: These prompts and connection attempts repeated multiple times. After several retries, the process failed with an “Unable to Connect” message.

Home Assistant Version / Environment

  • Core: 2025.3.2
  • Supervisor: 2025.03.2
  • Operating System: Home Assistant OS 14.2
  • Frontend: 20250306.0
  • Hardware: Home Assistant Green (running the above HA instance)

Troubleshooting Done

  • Device Reboots: Restarted the HAV PE device multiple times and retried the setup each time.
  • Network Reboots: Restarted the UniFi UDM Pro router and the UniFi U7 Pro access point to ensure a fresh network state.
  • Log Inspection: Checked Home Assistant core and supervisor logs during each attempt (no relevant error messages or clues were observed).
  • Network Settings: Ensured the IoT Wi-Fi network is strictly 2.4GHz (no 5GHz overlap) and has a simple SSID/password (to avoid special character issues).
  • Other Devices: Verified that other IoT devices (smart plugs, sensors, etc.) can connect to this IoT network without issues, confirming the network itself is functioning properly.

Request for Support

I am seeking guidance on why the HAV PE is unable to connect to the IoT Wi-Fi network in this setup. Are there any known issues with connecting the Voice Preview Edition to networks managed by UniFi UDM Pro (or to a separate IoT VLAN)? Additionally, please advise on any additional debugging steps or configuration changes I can try to resolve this problem.

Do you have a spare old Wifi router/AP you can plug into the HA network to see if the Voice will connect? Specifically thinking of another manufacturers wifi device (i.e. like an Asus router in AP mode).

Silly thing but I did have an occurrence once of a device that could actually connect to the wifi signal, but what was happening was the device could not get an IP from the DHCP server. Once I set it to static it connected via Wifi. Why this one device would fail with DHCP I do not know, eventually switch it to ethernet anyways so never cared to explore further.

Those two options above can help test whether the device just has issue connecting via Wifi or via your specified Wifi, and whether the connection can be made via wifi and just can not connect to the network

Any luck with this? Experiencing a similar issue but not even with an isolated IoT network, just a normal trusted network.
I have a UDR 7, so same ecosystem as well.

I had the same issue on a FritzBox. For me the Issue was solved by not using WiFi-channel 12 or 13

This cant connect to my Openwrt TP link wifi router. no matter what channel, any country, ive set all the settings on and off. this is no good. but my old school router i used when Obama was president, works flawless. (exact same settings) It might be with how the authentication is done. when i check the logs on the openwrt router this adruno chip, voice assistant don’t even show up as trying to connect. you can plug this in with usb and manually set it to use wifi settings. but that is way too much IMO. so i keep the Obamma up and spotty as hell wifi.

Well, after months of it sitting on my desk I decided to finally setup the HA Voice PE and…I’m experiencing the exact same issue as the OP here.

I have a Dream Machine SE and have a 2.4 GHz network setup with IOT Compatibility enabled. I’ve tried putting my phone on same network and attempting to add the device, I’ve tried updating firmware, erasing user data, etc.

Device refuses to take wifi credentials in all scenarios. What’s the trick?

Sanborn, if i remember correctly … to make that initial connection of Voice PE to wi-fi you need to turn on Bluetooth on your phone. It seems pretty strange, but I had the same thing getting my VPE to connect initially. Once connected to Wi-fi, the Bluetooth is not needed.

I also am having the same issue where my voice assitant won’t connect to wifi I have also tried the troubleshooting bluetooth is on and on same network. But I have two voice preview and neither one will connect to my wifi please can anyone help
