HA Yellow - Unreachable

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some help with my Home Assistant Yellow. I installed it about four months ago with a standard HassOS setup and had been keeping it updated. I’m not sure of the exact version at this point since I can no longer access the interface.

The issue is that I’ve suddenly lost connection to my HA Yellow. The red light is steady, and the yellow light is blinking, but I can’t reach it through any means. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Local access: Browsing to http://homeassistant.local:8123/ on my Windows machine (using Firefox, Edge, and Chrome) results in a “site cannot be found” message. I’ve confirmed my VPN is off.

  • Nabu Casa remote access: The long Nabu Casa link with the unique string followed by “ui.nabu.casa/auth” gives a “Secure Connection Failed” error (PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR). This seems related to the message in my Nabu Casa login which now states: “Remote UI, Your instance is not connected to Home Assistant Cloud, Remote address: Not available”.

  • Power cycle: I’ve rebooted the HA Yellow by power cycling it, but there’s no change.

For clarity, I was previously able to access it just fine from my local Windows machine, using the Nabu Casa link, and from my mobile phone. Then, suddenly, nothing.

Any insights or suggestions on how to troubleshoot this connection issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Miles

Can you get to the console using these instructions: Using the serial console for debugging (Windows) – Home Assistant Yellow.

Did you over ride the security settings for the browsers? So that they will open the"http:" versus “https”?

Thanks. I will try both.

Additional data points:

  • given that it is still carrying out my previously scheduled local automations it seems that HA is still running.
  • BUT - it is not backing up to Google even though I have an automation to do so.
  • Finally, it may be worth noting that it is connected to my router via Ethernet, not wireless.

Once you connect to the console using the instructions from the link above, you should see something like this:

At the prompt, enter the following command and post the output here.

ha network info

I think your router may have issued a new DHCP address to your HA Yellow…but I’ve been wrong before.

OK. I followed the referenced guide, but I have hit a snag identifying the port used. In my Device Manager it doesn’t clearly say what com port it is using. Here is a snip of what the Device Manager says and what the Properties are.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Did you physically connect the HA Yellow to the PC using the proper cable?

Confirming: a USB C plugged into the Yellow and a USB A into the PC, right? (Both on the same cable, obviously. Even I am not that dumb.)

I even changed cables, but I have the same result - other than the location changing in the Properties.

Firewall rule to allow the device to connect (Windows Security)?

Maybe reboot HA yellow after it is connected to the USB cable.

Might want to check your router to see the IP address associated with the HA Yellow. Does it exist, is it different form before, try connecting using that address?

If all else fails, reinstall Home Assistant and apply your most recent backup (that you should have stored off of the HA Yellow).

Have you tried “Update driver” on the PC?
You should see your com ports like this:

We have a winner. For the benefit of those who may come after …

You have to install the driver. And you cannot just leave it to Windows. It won’t find it. You have to go find it, download it, and install it. Then you will get this:

Now I have the NEXT issue. It wants me to login. Fine. But it won’t accept my login info.

Sigh.

Maybe I should just nuke it from space and reinstall.

You haven’t flashed the yellow have you? If you did, then did you try the original factory default ssh credentials (before any setup).
