HACS No Longer available?

Sorry if this is a repost. A search did not reveal this issue. I just purchased and installed home assistant green. everything went well and it even updated fine. searching on how I can add my meross and other "non" standard iot devices HACS came up. But this new version does not seem to allow HACS or other 3rd party repositories. Is this true. Am I stuck now with a product that can only see a quarter of my devices? I hope my only option is NOT another subscription as I was hoping to be fully local.

No that is not true. Third party integrations including HACS itself are definitely still allowed free of charge.

Did you try following the HACS installation instructions?

What happened?

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I tried many mechanisms and instructions i found online and it would take me to a dead end. the feature, toggle, button or selection did not appear as in the instructions so I went to AI and fed in my version information, and it returned this: Why HACS doesn’t work on 2026.x

Home Assistant 2026 introduced:

  • A new sandboxed extension model
  • A new restricted frontend
  • A new security layer
  • A new UI framework
  • Removal of user‑controlled advanced toggles

HACS relies on:

  • Custom frontend injection
  • Custom backend Python code
  • File system access
  • Legacy integration APIs

Those APIs were removed or locked down in 2026.x.

So HACS cannot install, cannot load, and cannot register itself.

A day or two ago I noticed that the HACS tab in HA web UI is blank. I've not had it installed long and was not sure if I'd tried it from mobile web before, but when I installed it it was there (in desktop web UI) and I used it to set up a community integration.

An LLM full of bullshit. What a surprise. Try the official instructions I linked to.

Thanks Tom. A couple UI changes but the instructions worked great and installation has completed.
