HAOS VM hosted in Windows, loss of connection overnight

I have a new PC where I am installing Home Assistant as new.
Home assistant is running in HA OS as a VirtualBox guest VM running on Windows 11 Home.

This can happen any time through the day but typically at night.

I have the HA OS VM console visible and running to troubleshoot the issue and appears to be up and running during the troubled time.

If I open VirtualBox to see what it has to say about the VM, I see the following two logs appear in the HAOS console:

  • systcmd[1]: systcmd-udcvd.service: Watchdog timeout (limit 3min)!
  • systcmd-coredump[1976001]: Process 87208 (system-journal) of user 0 terminated abnormally without generating a coredump.

After these two logs are posted - everything is working again. I do not need to restart HA or the VM.

VM issue, HAOS issue??

System configuration:

HA OS Version: 12.4, HA Core: 2024.7.4
VirtualBox 7.0.20 r163906 (Qt5.15.2)
Host: Windows 11 Home, 23H2, OS build 22631.3958

VM assigned 2 CPU, 2G RAM
Windows power management - disable sleep - same for network adaptor
VM Network adaptor is in Bridged Mode, Promiscuous - Allow all.

Can anyone think of something that I should consider?

It would appear that there is an issue between VirtualBox and the HomeAssistant VM. Hard to say which side is at fault but the solution for me was to switch to Hyper-V. Everything is now working fine.

VisualBox with HomeAssistant has been fairly unstable for me always.

Vmware is a bit harder to configure, but a 1000 times more reliable….
