Happy New Year!

Best wishes to all of you for the Winter Solstice.

'Tis the season for turning over a new leaf. We thought we’d share some of our resolutions with you.

  1. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.
Aww. Where’s the fun in that?
    Shut up.

  2. If it is broken, don’t blame the last update.
But what if it was the last update? It usually is.
No it isn’t. Did you read the release notes?
    Yes
    Including the breaking changes?
Is that the bit at the bottom?
    Yes.
    No.

  3. If it is broken, don’t rush out and buy new hardware.
Awwww. There’s so much good stuff on AliExpress. Cheap too.
    Think there’s a clue there?
    Don’t know what you mean.
    I’ve cancelled your credit card.

  4. Read the docs.
It’s pretty hard to find anything. And there was this great post about what rubbish Zigbee is, I just had to “like” that. And by the time I’d scrolled through the latest and corrected someone’s yaml… I’d forgotten what I was looking for.

  5. If you ask for help on the forum, read the replies.
    I do. Always. Nearly.
    And click on the links?
There’s only so many hours in the day, you know.

  6. Always remember that user error is a factor in 82% of IT problems.
User…? Is that, like, a log setting?
    If only.

  7. Always be generous to people with less technical knowledge and experience than you.
That’s a good one. I get really tired of rants about dumbing down. I bet there are a few dentists on the forum, but they don’t make sarcastic remarks about your bad breath.
    Exactly. Wait… what?

  8. Always do what @tom_l and @123 tell you.
    No argument there.

Need a couple more. Any suggestions?

  1. Always have a working backup.
I do but it does not work.
Did you test this backup to make sure you can use it to recover?
That is what I’m trying to do right now…but I need it for real !!!

Me: “I sent you the ISO installer and the md5 hash.”
Sys Admin: “Which one do I need to execute, the ISO or the little txt file?”
