Hardware recommendation for HA

Hi y’all,

Currently I’m running fhem in an RPi3 for home automation and like to move to HA. I use 8 Homematic heating thermostat, 5 Ikea tradfri Light bulbs with Ikea gateway and like max. 10 additional sensors. So I assume that my setup is rather limited. However, I read in the forum that a RPi3 might be in the lower end, ressource wise. Therefore I was looking for a mini PC. However, this got me totally confused, e.g. different generations of NUC. As I’m also considering using the device as a storage for backups, what would be the right hardware specs to search for? Are there any good recommendations available in the EU/Germany?

Thanks in advance
Tim

Best platform for HA is Odroid N2+ with 4G ram and 16 or 32G EMMC card. I personally wouldn’t use my HA system for a backup device as I don’t like mixing diverse functionality.

I used to run HA on tiny :pinching_hand: machine with eMMC flash which is now grid locked (dead) :put_litter_in_its_place:

Better skip (sub) mediocre flash and ether use spinning disks or quality ssd (with SLC cache) for database applications like HA :bulb:

I migrated to i7 with 20 GB of ram rad 30 GB of swap with dual ssd. It’s probably too much but I could have this comp so I took it.

For what use case exactly?

I use HA since many years and started with 512MB of RAM then upgraded to 1GB and went further to 2GB (that was the machine with eMMC that died). Recently I moved to a machine with 8GB but even with more than 100 devices and frigate running I hardly have more than 30% (~2.5GB) of the RAM utilized at every time. :man_shrugging:

I could get my hands on it for free as my company changed computers. I don’t say that you need it but why not. There is one feature in bios that I really like. It can turn it self on in case of power outage.

This discussion comes up frequently. At the risk of repeating myself yet again, I’ll just leave it at this:

My RPi 3B+ with 1G and an SD card has been running HA for over 4-1/2 years now. I just checked and it was running at 6% CPU and 50% memory.

I’ve been running HA on odroid emmc for multiple years without issue to this point.
