Currently I’m running fhem in an RPi3 for home automation and like to move to HA. I use 8 Homematic heating thermostat, 5 Ikea tradfri Light bulbs with Ikea gateway and like max. 10 additional sensors. So I assume that my setup is rather limited. However, I read in the forum that a RPi3 might be in the lower end, ressource wise. Therefore I was looking for a mini PC. However, this got me totally confused, e.g. different generations of NUC. As I’m also considering using the device as a storage for backups, what would be the right hardware specs to search for? Are there any good recommendations available in the EU/Germany?
Best platform for HA is Odroid N2+ with 4G ram and 16 or 32G EMMC card. I personally wouldn’t use my HA system for a backup device as I don’t like mixing diverse functionality.
I use HA since many years and started with 512MB of RAM then upgraded to 1GB and went further to 2GB (that was the machine with eMMC that died). Recently I moved to a machine with 8GB but even with more than 100 devices and frigate running I hardly have more than 30% (~2.5GB) of the RAM utilized at every time.
I could get my hands on it for free as my company changed computers. I don’t say that you need it but why not. There is one feature in bios that I really like. It can turn it self on in case of power outage.
