HASS, Plex and file server setup

Hi all

I have a few questions about the above that I’m hoping you can help me with.

I’ll be going with the above 3 in some form soon but unsure what the best setup is.

In the new house we’ll have ethernet in every room (multiple for some) as well as good WiFi via Unifi dream machine pro, switch, and 2x APs.

I’ll have a rack to house these components, which I was also going to put a home server into, likely repurposing an old CPU, mobo, ram, SSD, and PSU before eventually doing a proper one with redundancy and ECC etc.

For the home server, my wife and I work from home so having a centralised server to store work etc will help a lot. We also try to only write programs to NVME drives etc for longevity. Also having a daughter and thinking about another kid in the future, we want a place to store all of our photos and videos safely.

For the Plex server, you know the drill ^^ Lots of things we like to watch, but with the added issue that we live in China so censorship is an issue so downloading the unedited versions is often the way to go, especially with VPNs and other proxies being unstable for streaming.

HASS I’m aware can run on pretty much anything, but I’ve also heard about instability on PIs, as well as issues when migrating to a new setup. With this in mind I’m more tempted to get this sorted in its (pretty much) final form to reduce the likelihood of any issues.

What would you guys recommend as the ideal setup in terms of stability? This is the most important thing for us. So far I think the below are the main options but open to any and all suggestions!

  • Separate servers for each. Sounds like overkill to me, also a higher energy bill.
  • Dockers. I’ve never used this before but am familiar with it in principle, though not sure of the best setup. Possibly a Linux file server with HASS and Plex dockers?
  • Mix of both. As mentioned, stability is the main thing. If it’s best to go with something like a NUC for HASS and then a dedicated file server/Plex then that’s fine
  • I know virtual machines are an option too. I’m kind of wanting to stay away from this as I have had some stability issues in the past, but also open to it again if others confirm their thoughts. Also with Unifi Teleport I think remoting in might be a little easier if needed.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions. If you need any more information to give a more informed suggestion then let me know!

Edit: To confirm (as I’ve seen this on other articles) right now I just have these 3 in mind. My CCTV/NVR is Unifi based so no other resource intensive software running that I’m aware of.

I just recently did a very similar thing. New home constructions, wired to everything, brand new Unifi network setup in my first rack in a dedicated closet. Love it!

Honestly I want the easy way for these extras though. I use a Synology for my NAS which stores both my media (TV/Movies/Photos) as well as work and other critical data.

Then for HA I just bought one of the “blue” premade boxes. I put both of these (along with some other smart home hubs like HOOBS and Hubitat) onto a 2U Rack Shelf in the rack. That also holds my cable modem.
