Hassbian version 1.23, hassbian-config install openzwave locks up

Trying to run hassbian-config to install openzwave, I get to a _Running setup.py install for cython … _ and it stops. I let it sit for over a day and it did not move. I tried it twice. Below is the second time I tried. I am trying a fresh load from Hassbian 1.23. This is a PI B with a 16 gig SD card.

pi@hassbian:~ $ sudo hassbian-config install openzwave

I gave up on mine and bought a PI3 which works a treat

The web page says …

Hassbian is our customized operating system for the Raspberry Pi 3. It is the easiest way of installing Home Assistant.

Does Hasbian only support Pi 3? How big of an SD card is needed?

In the for what it worth category, I turned on verbose, here is my guess of where the script is stopping (Code.o).

Yeps that’s where mine stopped too.

I know the note said " Currently locked to this version since build fails for later versions.", but I thought I would try this command “pip3 install cython --verbose”.
I may try and lock it down to older version.

Also, I was going to order a Pi 3 anyway, but I was hoping to use my old one for the controller. So I just order my Pi 3, next I hope I can find my micro SD.

Another thought, if I let it sit long enough, the Pi locks up. I had a second putty terminal opened. The one executing the install would not respond to ^C and the second one was at the prompt, it would not respond either, I had to power down/up the Pi.

BTW, thought might be out of diskspace, there was nothing about specs on the install main page, but look ok to me.

I used the AIO installer as hassbian didn’t exist then. I use my old Model B’s for audio and mqtt server, so they are still useful

Why did you not run it (mqtt) on the Pi3 with HASS? (I may have know the answer if I was more along in my HASS knowledge)

First, I misspoke, The Pi I grabbed was an A not a B. Looks like I would have had the same issues. I was on the original waiting list.
Back to the point, I went back a version to 0.19.1 and it installed. Not sure if it will work. I am still making dumb mistakes. My Pi 3 should be here today and SD card tomorrow, until then I will continue to play with what I have. I have some unused zwave devices I am playing with. BTW, my house right now is running on Almond+. The main thing that attracted me to HASS was the alarm decoder. I want to get my bearings on the zwave devices first so I can move my HA from Almond to HASS.
Here was my hack … “pip3 install --upgrade cython==0.19.1 --verbose”

This is like the 4th time I have imaged the SD card. I do have some suggestions for the hassbian web pages.
I think it is documented correctly, but maybe a couple of points might be more in your face. At least for us that tend to speed read .

  1. The main page might say, in bold “Only Pi 3 are supported”.
  2. On the installation page, the install script mention might be better served at the top of the page. For each component, you might start with a command line example that could be cut and pasted.
My first time reading the page, I googled each step and did it by hand. It sure is easier using the scripts.

Update, after STOPPING HASS, and NOT checking the USB on the OZWCP, I was able to connect and add my test device. One that I thought strange, it is a vision 2 relay switch, but under current values I see 3 on/off. I was expecting 2.
Bottom line, looks like the open zwave/ozwcp install worked.

Good to know  I did originally have my mqtt server on my PI3 but decided to move it over to my old PIB to save some resources for other things and now I may dedicate my CHIP to mqtt as that’s currently gathering dust :stuck_out_tongue:

Now looks like I get to pester the configuration people. :innocent:

I’m fairly certain your running out of ram.
I forgot about that when making the config scripts.
I could make a custom one for older pies if you want to use the old one?

You don’t need to for me, I was playing with the older one till my Pi 3 and memory arrived. Which by the way did yesterday and it is loading as I am typing. If you want to, I don’t mind testing. I did take the time to google how to tell the difference. I am runn Rev 0002, which is a Pi 1 B. So I did have 512 of memory.[quote=“Landrash, post:12, topic:17767”]

Could be, but as I said, 0.19 did install. I was having several issues getting my zwave up. Most of them is just being a newbie. I did not want to ask questions because I did not know if it was something I was doing or the way I installed. Since I was hacking the config scripts, I figured it would be considered “unsupported”.

If you want me to test the scripts on a Pi 1 B, let me know. Again, being a newbie, I may need some help in the test cases.

I do have one of each of the pi’s with exception of the A versions so testing that won’t be that bad on my part.
I’m adding it to the wishlist for Hassbian since there’s most likely more than you that will run into this problem.

My first pass with the Pi 3, I can not SSH into it. I found it on nmap …

Nmap scan report for 192.168.60.209
Host is up (0.00s latency).
MAC Address: B8:27:EB:FB:64:77 (Raspberry Pi Foundation)

I can ping it, but I get a “Software caused connection abort”.
I going to reimage the SD card, if I still have an issue, that will be for another thread.
Thanks again for your reply.

IIRC you have to enable ssh by putting a file (called ssh) in the boot directory (root dir in win 10 when exploring the card) if you haven’t got a keyboard/mouse/monitor connected when you initially boot (so that you can enable ssh thru the config program), i think it’s a new thing that they took ssh out of the boot procedure.

Not with hassbian. It’s already done.

OK, didn’t know that
