Have I lost the plot or are states in a bit of state?

Not sure if this is just me, or if anyone else has noticed.

States appear to be inconsistent. Rather than dribble on about this, here’s my example:

Am I missing something fundamental here?

Some entity types have front end representations that are based on their device type. These are meant to create a “friendlier” user experience. However, these representations are not the actual State value. For binary sensors the only allowable states are “on” or “off”.
