Having trouble enabling device tracking

I’m trying to setup my system to use presence detection, and I’m having some trouble.

I have a Netgear router, and I entered this into the configuration.yaml file:

device_tracker:
  - platform: netgear
    password: XXXXXXXXXXXX
    interval_seconds: 10
    consider_home: 0:05
    new_device_defaults:
      track_new_devices: true
      hide_if_away: false

The program generated a known_device.yaml file as expected, but the first thing I noticed were a series of log errors:

One of the devices in question appears like this in the known_devices.yaml file (Mac address obviously removed):

XX_XX_XX_XX_XX_XX:
  hide_if_away: false
  icon:
  mac: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
name: XX XX XX XX XX XX
  picture:
  track: true

My devices are also not being recognized in the Overview screen.

I set this up previously and did get the devices recognized, but they reported home even though I drove one device several miles away. I also saw the same error messages in the log file above. After that, I deleted the known_devices file, commented out the Netgear router info, rebooted and set it up again. Now as above, I’m getting the same log errors, but the devices are not being seen (these log errors did not show up after I deleted the known_devices file and commented out the Netgear router and after rebooting – only when I reset them again did the errors show up).

I’m using the Home Assistant app on both of these devices. All location sources are enabled on the app, and the location coordinates are reporting correctly, with a radius of 100 meters.

Enabling this functionality is critical to my plans for this system. Any thoughts on what I missed?

Did you also reboot the netgear

I just tried that, I’ll see how it goes.

Other steps since my last post:

I went through the “Cleaning between builds” doc, as well as deleting the known_devices.yaml file and removing the Netgear settings from my configurations.yaml file. I rebooted and started with a clean slate. I reloaded my Home Assistant app on the iPhone, and I associated my iPhone device tracker with my Persons persona ( device_tracker.jons_iphone ). The pynetgear error messages went away, but I received several one-time messages for “Received message for unregistered webhook”. I now show up in the Overview screen as “Home”. I left the house at about 4:30 pm EST, and just returned at about 8:30 pm. When I checked the status of my device, it says I have been Home from 4:30 pm – so it’s not registering me as away.

Help! Any other thoughts?

There a note in the docs regarding issue with Orbi API V2 delaying updates and adding the accesspoint: node to your config

Do I simply add the line accesspoint: to my config file, or do I need to add anything along with that?

After adding accesspoints:, I’m back to these errors:

2020-01-17 21:25:44 WARNING (SyncWorker_6) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']
2020-01-17 21:25:47 WARNING (SyncWorker_17) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']
2020-01-17 21:26:00 WARNING (SyncWorker_14) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']
2020-01-17 21:26:13 WARNING (SyncWorker_11) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']

In the docs
The use of devices or exclude is recommended when using accesspoints to avoid having a lot of entries.

@Harry13, I don’t have a lot of devices, so it’s okay to not muck around too much excluding or including. The only device I’m testing is the iPhone, so that one is tagged with my persona.

I’m still getting those strange pynetgear unexpected entry errors. I wish I could find out what’s causing them. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to test the accesspoints: change. Right now, I’m showing up as home. I did earlier, too. We’ll see if it registers me away tomorrow when I leave the house.

Does anyone have any further ideas what I can do to get this working? I’ve followed the setups to the letter. The tracker shows up as home, but doesn’t register me as away when I leave. I’m still seeing these errors when restarting HA:

2020-01-18 11:22:03 WARNING (SyncWorker_12) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']
2020-01-18 11:22:07 WARNING (SyncWorker_3) [pynetgear] Unexpected entry: ['']

Is there another forum where I could post this question if no one here can help?
