Having Z-Wave Setup Issues

Hi all,

I’m having some issues getting started with z-wave. I have HassOS 1.12 (version 139) installed on a raspberry pi 3, Zooz ZST10 S2 Z-Wave Plus USB Stick as my Z-Wave controller.

My controller gets picked up no problem at all, had some initial issues getting the USB to remain following a reboot however thanks to some pointers in the forum that has now been resolved. The problem I am currently having is that I can’t connect any z-wave device.

So far I have tried to connect a Fibaro Motion Sensor (ZW5 V3.2 EU), a Samsung Smartthings Outlet and an AeroTec Ranger Extender. After following the instructions taken from the guides here and the manufacture for each product I end up with no devices added.

An extract from my log after trying to add a device looks like this:

Am very new to Home Assistant and have tried to follow all the instructions as close as I can so not sure what I am missing. Any ideas?

Where have you looked to see if any devices were actually added?

zwcfg xml file in the config directory, the nodes in the z-wave control panel and z-wave section on integrations and the ozw log file. Not sure there is anywhere else I should be looking?

Can you see the z stick in the node section of the Zwave control panel? I think that should be node 1.

the log you showed only has commands for node 1.

What is the procedure you are using to add the devices?

I can see the controller in node 1 in the control panel. To add the node I am pressing the add node button in the control panel then putting my devices into pairing mode. I’ve tried in the other order too to no effect.

One of the devices is a better powered device so I’ve made sure to follow the steps to wake the device before trying to connect it

It sounds like everything should be working then.

Have tried putting the devices really (REALLY) close to the controller when you try to pair them?

Otherwise it’s just trial and error trying to find the correct procedure for your particular device. I don’t have either of those devices so I’m afraid I can’t help you with that.

If I put them any close they will be inside each other :joy: I’ll keep digging and see what I can come up with… Thanks

I am not an expert, and some of these steps may not be needed but this has worked for me:

  1. Unpair device through home assistant
  2. Factory reset the device (this procedure does not involve the zwave controller or home assistant)
  3. Pair device through home assistant

Thanks, I’ve factory reset both the devices I am trying to add as per their respective instructions and tried to add them again to home assistant. Seems to be exactly the same with neither device adding.

I have a Samsung SmartThings hub which I have fired up, I can connect these devices to that first time with no issue so I know that the devices are working (trying to rule things out). Removed the devices from SmartThings, factory reset them and tried to pair again to Home Assistant with the same result. Starting to look like it’s either Home Assistant or the Controller that are the problem.

Kinda stuck :s

I have spent countless hours battling all kinds of zwave issues. Sometimes things go smoothly and sometimes things go very badly.

Have all the devices are you trying to add to Home Assistant been paired to a different controller previously?

if they have, you might try this.

  1. Unpair from old controller if possible
  2. Factory reset device (make sure you find the actual factory reset instructions from the manufacturer)
  3. Unpair from Home Assistant, check ZWave Log, hopefully there will be a message that says the device was removed successfully.
  4. Pair to Home Assistant.

He already said he did a factory reset on the devices so that would take care of steps 1 thru 3 that you suggested above.

@Beefus
the only thing you didn’t mention that you tried was factory resetting the controller.

If that doesn’t work I’m out of ideas.

Simple logic implies that would be true. Given all the crazy issues I have encountered with zwave devices, I am very hesitant to make any assumptions at all. You are probably right, but it is worth the time it takes to run the experiment. Especially if nothing else is working.

If the devices were all previously paired to Smart Things and they can still be paired to the same Smart Things controller, but not the new ZWave Controller, that still seems like a potential clue.

Completed a full factory rest of the devices again (only takes 2 seconds to do so no biggy), completed a factory reset of the controller and then went through some fun and games getting home assistant to see it again but all good.

Powered on the smartthings hub and checked to see if my two devices were listed following their removal and factory resets, they aren’t so I’m confident these two devices are not connected to anything. Tried to pair them to the controller in home assistant and sadly no joy, they still don’t connect.

Have been trawling the forum here and across the Internet and z-wave does seem to be a pretty temperamental beast, Am going to try some other things tomorrow but brain has reached the point of being fried for the night.

Thanks for the suggestions for all so far…

Did you figure this out? I’m having the exact same problem. Last node I added to my ZWAVE network is Node20, but I don’t seem to be able to add another device to it.

This is what I get on the logs:

It is like the controller is trying to add Node001 which is actually the z-stick?
I’m not sure what is going on here.

Thanks,
R. Rod

Nevermind, I was able to pair it after resetting the smoke detector to its factory settings. Thanks!

I know this is old, but I am having the exact same problem, was this fixed?
