On another note, are the plate detections always accurate?
Its good, but not perfect, I would say 85%, the bigger problem is the Unifi protect integration has some bugs, for example the Camera will detect a plate and I would not pass that information to home assistant, so the automation will not get triggered. 
I would be nice to get someone to look into that or maybe my configuration is not setup correctly. I tried almost all the option possible.
Is the plate not being passed to HA, for example, the camera plate log and HA plate log does not match, or the automation doesn’t trigger?
The Unifi Protect NVR will log a license plate detected, but that information doesn’t get passed to HA, not even in the HA entity history, I have to reload the protect integration to have it work again. Also after reloading the protect integration the previous Plate that was detected in the Protect NVR, doesn’t show up in the HA entity history.
Have you read the known issues, or you should probably log an issues.
