Help wiring 5 pin RGBW led strip to ESP8266

Hi everyone,

I’m brand new here and starting to learn HA. I decided to give WLED a go to see if I can do some funky stuff with my kitchen lights. Right now they can turn on/off and change colours. I wanted to see if I could add some effects, which brings me to where I am.

I have looked everywhere to find help on wiring a 5 pin led strip to an ESP8266 board and so far nothing has come up. Hoping someone here can help. Here is the hardware I have.

LED-FLS-5050-84RGBW - More Information
LED-SNP200-24VL - More Information
DIGISHUO 2Pcs ESP8266 NodeMCU CH340 ESP-12E - Won’t let me post more than 2 links.

I understand I can run the 24v power supply to the lights and power the board with 5v. So far everything I have seen is for RGB and not RGBW. My led strips use 5 pins.

Wires are
– R
– G
– B
– W
– 24+

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

What hardware are you using to control the 24v?

These are common anode RGBW led’s. Common anode means you control them on the ground side. So…
24 - will be 24v + (pos)

R,G,B,W will be connected to Ground (24v - )

You need a 24v 4 channel led driver though and one that is common anode, not common cathode.

These are what I normally use. They use NPN mosfets which control the load with the ground. It does up to 27VDC and 10a so its rated higher than you need and it has 4 channels, 1 for each R,G,B, and W. I use several of them to control my landscape lighting, i like them.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for taking a look. At the moment I am using the Shelly RGBW2 to control the lights being turned on/off, changing colour and dimming. I would like to swap this out for the ESP8266 so I can put other effects on it.

EDIT: Just saw your additional reply. So if I purchase these, I will be able to hook up the ESP8266 to these and control the fancy effects on my LEDs? What would the wiring on that look like ( if you don’t mind doing a rought sketch )?

Cheers.

You do realize the Shelly’s use esp boards inside of them, right? The headers are already broken out and can be accessed from the outiside and you dont even need to open the case.

You have 24v RGBW a.k.a dumb led’s and you’re going to be pretty limited in what effects you can do.

I didn’t know that. The Shelly only has like 2 effects which are pretty lame. That’s why I thought I would give WLED a go. Are you saying I can just put WLED in to the shelly device?

That Im not sure about, I just know you can flash Esphome. Those led’s arent worth trying to flash wled on a shelly anyway. RGBW led’s are not smart addressable led’s which can do really cool effects. RGBW are more for solid color ambient lighting for like, kitchen counters, book cases, under beds…

And you got 24v led’s which means its even more restrictive on what you can do as far as effects.

Ah fair enough. I guess that’s why I couldn’t find anything online. Hey, thanks very much for the help man. I appreciate it. I guess now I need to go look for some LEDs that will do what I want them to do. Is there any addressable LED strips you can suggest that will work with WLED and hopefully include a white in there too?

Dont let me discourage you, they arent worthless or anything. I use RGB led’s above and below my kitchen counters just as ambient lighting and night lights and they look awesome.

For addressable led’s I always used Alitove. Do your homework though!! Theres differences between 12v ws2811 and the 5v ones. Theres also strips and pixels. Some are better for certain things than the other.
These are pixels.

Heres this too, incase you want to flash that with esphome.

Theres another brand that is real popular too and they are a little bit 1-2$ cheaper per strip. I dont recall the name though. You used to have to order them from china and i refused so i dont recall the brand.

Ah thank you so much! That’s awesome.

The LEDs I have at the moment are already installed inside the kitchen cabinets (profile is set in the wood). It will be a bit of a pain replacing them, but that’s okay. I was hoping I could get away with the ones I already had. I’ll e-mail the supplier and see if they are addressable just to make sure before I buy new stuff.

Those strips you linked are pretty cool, unfortunately they don’t have a white which makes them unusable for the kitchen counter. I’m thinking rather than having the strips sit on the bottom of the U profile, I may be able to get two different strips mounted to either side of the profile. It’s a bit of a hack job, but it may just do the trick.

Just in case anyone finds this thread helpful, these are the current strips I am talking about - Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Ya, thats true those dont have white channels but you can get them with a white channel. I was one who didnt do my due diligence and installed these in my kitchen and hated the “white” with blue-ish tint and i eventually added white led’s in addition. Its been so long I forget all the details.

For what its worth, these are another favorites. No white channel wither but, you can use these as a single RBG light in esphome or wled. The coolest part is they are made to be linked together and then, say you have 10 then you can wire the data line straight to an esp board and use them as a 10 led string either in esphome or wled. I have some i use for the holidays and love them.

These you dont need to use some third party like Govee or open them up and modify the electronics inside or destroy the waterproofing seal. They’re just a big 10w or 20w single ws2811.

Oh, that is seriously cool. You’re going to get me into trouble with the minister of finance :stuck_out_tongue:

In Australia everything is more expensive, so I am thinking to give AliExpress a shot and see what LED stuff I can find there. Those flood lights you posted are really cool though. I can imagine it would be pretty cool to hook it up to the pergola and have them sync with lights in the garden.

Thanks again for the help and input, mate. Lucky you replied or I would have spent the night looking for way to get this running.

You tell the the finance minister to cough up the debit card because you’ve got some lights to install and they’re going to look bad a$$!

You’re a braver man than I :joy:

You gotta put your foot down and tell them who wears the pants in the house! I’m not scared, I wear the pants in my house… at least until my finance minister gets home.

Hahahaha!

Well done, mate. You got a good laugh out of me.

LOL. You know there is a WLED forum and Facebook group. If you ever need some information or ideas, those are good places. A lot of people post pictures or videos of their lighting projects too.

Thanks for the tip! How do I send a PM/DM on this software? I got something for you as a small token of my appreciation for your help.
