Homate (HA copy)

I just noticed that a belgian company just sells Home Assistant as a service/ hardware, bit strange to charge money for other people’s work…

Assuming they they are adhering to the terms of the licence there’s no reason they can’t redistribute and sell it.

Just saw the same on the news this evening… (VTM / VRT) they position their application as “in-house build” which made me really think if they publicly make such a statement.

Totally separate from the fact if there is a license or not that covers reuse I think that this kind of practice is just crooked and not done. The least they could’ve done is either not call it in-house build or mention the underlying platform.

On the video’s you can clearly see they use the HA interface. (Thermostat)

What I don’t like is that some people make integrations in HACS for some devices, which they do for free, and they charge money to use this same integration

I do see Home Assistant mentioned on the homepage

I can see the added value of a company installing and maintaining Home Assistant for customers. It would be lame if they would sell it as developed by themselves. Which I can’t really determine based on what I saw.

Open source means you can sell it too. The decent thing to do, however, is to use the money to build up the company and the software so the company can contribute back to the software. Share-and-share-alike in a voluntary way.
