Home Assistant and numerous Alexa issues

I’ve been battling Alexa issues since I began using Home Assistant about 6 weeks ago. I now have many devices in Alexa on my Android phone that if I tap, it does not access the device settings, it just returns to the main screen. I have numerous devices that when I try to use Alexa it tells me the device must be turned on. Or some other error. Now I just paired a Kwikset 888 door lock with HA. Unbeknownst to me it was added to Alexa and now I have about 200 entities for this lock in my Alexa devices! You can see some of them in the screenshot.

I can find no way whatsoever to delete devices from the Alexa app, which is a real pain. Not sure what can be done about this but it doesn’t bode well.

Update: I just chatted with Amazon support for over an hour. They are going to escalate this issue regarding deleting devices.

in settings >> voice assistant >> Alexa

you can select which devices will be added to alexa. docs

Separately, in alexa app you can go to app >> settings >> device settings you may delete devices, disable/enable devices, etc. I belive you can do this from the page showing device controls but I stopped using this app a year ago and forget.

Last I remember alexa app syncs that devices to be add but does not sync removed devices (this means remove devices based on setting in HA). Possibly if you remove HA skill maybe it deletes the devices added using skill. That would get you to a managable zero in Alexa app. You may then correctly set the devices you want to share with alexa be reenabling the skill. This is at your own risk as its been a while since I did this but if you have invested no effort til know it should be no big deal.

Thanks I’m aware of adding devices to the Alexa integration. For some reason the Kwikset 888 lock was automatically added to Alexa. Along with several hundred of it’s entities! After removing the Kwikset lock, I only have devices in Alexa that I want there. Another issue is that I’ve paired devices more than once causing duplicate devices. And another issue I’m running the Hubitat integration, which may have caused duplicate devices as well. It’s a mess.

I’m hoping that Amazon support will delete the devices for me. I have a ticket open with them for this.

same spot…“expose new entities”
turn on toggle in HA

in settings >> voice assistant >> Alexa >> expose new entities >> disable / toggle off

in HA, you can bulk “do not expose” devices.
I dont think alexas removes based on this but if you delete HA skill and readd I expect it would.

Yes, I turned the lock of in Alexa yesterday. But the hundreds of entities are still in the Alexa app. And I still cannot tap on a device to delete. When I tap on a device it just returns to the main screen. I’m waiting for Amazon support to get
back to me.

I turned off the expose new entities in the Alexa settings. That way I can decide if I want voice control over a device at least.

-Thanks

This plus the fact that they started sending emails and advertisements based on network and sound surveillance is why I gave away all my Alexa’s and replaced with HA voice devices.

They are worse in some areas, equal in some and better in some. Pretty much a wash.

I’ve looked into the HA voice and I’m intrigued. I’m hoping the final version has an intercom feature which is what prevents me from switching over. I may get one to play with and familiarize myself with. I’ve read you can actually get them to respond with AI answers. That could be interesting.

That was big for me.

It had announce feature “broadcast”
It has one way to device

Drop in is missing but im sure it will be added.

Alexa is better
HA voice local only non LLM is like 2016 Alexa.
HA voice w/ LLM local or remote is equal or better.

Thanks I’ll hold off for now. I’m too busy migrating automations and devices from my Hubitat to HA.

Agreed. I wanna change the 7 Alexa devices with something not cloud based, but I’ve not found comparable devices which are able to:

  • Send announcement to them
  • play a sync’d radio stream on them
  • play defined audio files
  • capable to listen to simple voice commands
  • being with a sufficiant sound quality or allow ro connect to external amp via chinch or 3,5mm jack

If someone have a recommendation - I would be very thankful.

Esp based devices can do all of above.

This depends on your setup but currently I think it works well enough

I suggest buy a device to test
This I feel is comparable to gen1 echo

Thanks, you’ve definitely piqued my interest!

Hi.
Thanks for this link. I’ve no doubt, I can do ESP and all the funny config stuff - I like it, to be honest.
But - Home Assistant is a stable platform for the whole family and they should be able to use it, even when I’m not around. That’s why - for Home Assistant - I avoid to do fancy solutions which do require maintenance and troubleshooting on a level, not everybody in the family if familiar with.
That’s why we have the Alexa devices in place and that’s basically what I want to replace. So far, I only see great self-engaged projects and solutions, but I miss the ready to use out-of-the-box solution.
Thanks.
