Home Assistant Cloud Traffic

Hello Folks,

I enabled Home Assistant Cloud yesterday and I’ve noticed interesting traffic (13.7GB) leaving my hass server. Can anyway explain?

Where is the traffic going?

The only traffic that can be configured to be sent out of HA to them is your used component list, AFAIK.
That is set in your config.yaml:

updater:
  # Optional, allows Home Assistant developers to focus on popular components.
  include_used_components: true

Aside from that, data can and will be sent out for anything that’s not local, but cloud based.
Are you using an Alexa integration? A Google Assistant integration? Homekit? Do you have any components configured which communicate over the cloud? All of these will necessitate data being sent from HA.

Do you have any add-ons installed which have the possibility of sending data out (something obvious like Plex or Samba, or something less obvious)? Does the device hosting Home-Assistant run anything other than HA? Could the server have had an OS update?

Do you have any idea where the traffic was sent to? To the internet, or to another device on your lan?

In any case, ~14GB is a lot of traffic, so I would assume it’s not simple text data, but large files, images/video (have a camera in your config?) or something like that.
