Maybe it’s just me, but recently I have noticed a certain rush of the development team to launch glitzy things just for the sake of it: year of the voice, home assistant for your car, how can I assist. I’m in no way saying they are useless, but that they are launched in a less than a basic state, with crippled features, with big usability issues. I may be wrong, but it looks to me that they are just trying to tick some boxes and to be as loud as possible about it. If so, this may be explained by the fact that they are preparing for an exit/IPO/M&A and they need to show the longest possible list of features. Even the language is becoming more and more corporate like, with a lot of exciting, tremendous, huge, amazing, spectacular, words that I would say you don’t really hear so often in the daily talk of common people. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing against such a step. There’s been a hell of a lot of work put into HA, so monetizing this work would be the natural and obvious thing to do and the devs certainly deserve to be rewarded for their work. I am a long time HA user and I am grateful to the devs for what they have created and all I want to say is that I am only trying to adjust my expectations to this possible new paradigm, without complaining too much. But if I am right, the devs should think if this rush serves or harms their purpose. Because, getting back on topic, I find the car version of HA ridiculously useless. Didn’t have the patience to check it too much, because digging deep in endless lists of entities (and I’m sure there are lots of you with much more entities than me) is a deal breaker for me. I don’t even know if it is usable, given the limitations put in place by Google for what you can do if the car is moving, how many button presses you are allowed, etc. For the moment I will stick with my legacy access via web browser, with a customized dashboard that gives me quick access to the things I really need in my car (and no, the pantry light or the bathroom light are not among them): garage door, front gate, front door lock, alarm system. Of course others may have different needs, but in the end the lack of customization possibilities is the same for all of us. I hope nobody will feel offended by my comment.

Sad, I am getting a similar impression. Lots of new features - but number of old bugs is increasing.

I have a completely different opinion. In current world of quick release cycles and agile software development I’m actually in favor of releasing early versions to broad audience for collecting feedback and most importantly seeing which features actually get attention and traction before investing heavily in development.
Keep up great work guys!

There must be a balance between efforts for releasing new features and efforts to solve bugs and rectify observations.

Volunteers can and should work on whatever it is they want to do with their own free time. Feedback is always appreciated but it should be respectful to those who dedicate their own free time to provide features for others to enjoy.

Do you imply that there is no balance at the moment?
What is your data to take such conclusion? Have you looked at the change logs over the past year?
What is the right balance in your opinion?

No, I do not.
So, answering other 3 questions in your post is not needed.
Saying “currently there is no balance” - means “I analized all new features & all current bugs and made this conclusion” - which is not true.
What I imply is “there is some amount of old bugs & observations which are critical for me - and currently I am very interested in solving them, may be more interested than in new features”, pardon my broken English.

Agreed, same for devs, same for testers, same for users who find bugs & give observations, same for users who share solutions.
As for the main topic, I really appreciate efforts “HA for auto”. Currently I am already having a dashboard for my car, with some limited features…

Agile doesn’t mean release buggy software.

This is not a thread for rants or complaints. Please keep commentary on topic, constructive and unemotional (for example a phrase like “ridiculously useless” is not helpful nor respectful of those that devote their free time to help others)

There are a number of developers who are not volunteers. They are paid by a company that users fund.

I can tell my employees what to do (within reason). So can the management of nabu casa.

Talking about those who are actively contributing to the android repo. You are right there are paid developers but none currently for the mobile apps. So as of now all contributors are volunteers like the ones who made this current release possible.

Yes of course but please consider the context of things said up above

I for one am hugely appreciative of both the companion app and the car integration, wear OS app as well now I think about it. I’m using all 3 daily. So, a huge thank you from me to the people involved in creating them.

Specific to Android Auto, I think the first release, keeping in mind it is just the first release, is solid. Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

Good to know, and no criticism of anyone. The companion app is a blessing!
