Home Assistant Companion's Purpose

What exactly was the purpose of Home Assistant “Companion”? I had a fully working setup to my Home Assistant server both locally, and remotely, using DNS + port forwarding on my router with access to my local server from anywhere in the world using the Home Assistant Android application. Now, it only scans my local network for a server. It will not accept any URL mode server addresses. I can now only get international acess using a web browser and the same underlying configuration that I had setup. What gives?

What gives. Flat out. Something is wrong with your setup.

A working companion app does not work that way.

The ‘purpose’ is to allow HA access to the special features your mobile device offers.

(like allow an android to set HA Conversation as your default AI, use device location etc.)

Total disconnect here. I used to be able to launch Home Assistant via the Android app and get directly connected to my HA’s dashboards without having to be reauthenticated. Now, on my Android phone and even after having uninstalled and reinstalled “Companion”, when I launch companion on my phone, only my directly connected server is available. If i disconnect my phone from my local Wifi and go to another network, my server becomes unavailable which goes against the advertisement of “accessing everything from anywhere”. How can I completely remove the companion integration and go back to the way it used to work?

Did you turn on external access through Nabu casa or otherwise expose your HA to the outside world? You need a way to connect if you have not exposed your install there’s no way for your phone to hit it.

The Android app used to work just fine before the latest upgrades to my server; as well, the web browser access and port forwarding technique still work from anywhere and any network.

Share your server configuration on the companion app.

How do i do that?
