Home Assistant Crashing About 2 Times A Day

Hello,

I have an issue where my home assistant instance will go offline about once or twice a day. I will try to access it and it just says, “can’t be reached” etc… I also tried opening it through Nabu Kasa cloud and the same thing happened. This was not a previous issue. I have had my instance working for a while and suddenly this is occurring. The only way to temporarily fix is to unplug the NUC, which I am running home assistant directly on, and replugging it in. This causes it to open in safe mode.

I do not know exactly how to give the correct logs… I opened supervisor logs and these were orange and red

Directly installed on a 512gb m.2 SSD, inside a new mini pc/nuc.
HACS is installed for a few custom integrations.

This isn’t an access issue. Your HA core container is crashing.

The fact that it returns to normal after a restart seems to indicate something may be using up all your RAM or CPU. You can monitor this with the System Monitor integration.

If you use loops in your automations or scripts check these can actually exit. Infinite loops eat RAM.

It could also be due to a rouge 3rd party integration. There is some advice here on how to track that down: 2024.5+: Tracking down instability issues caused by integrations

I am guessing this is not a problem with any of my scripts or automations. I only have a few setup to turn lights on/off at specific times of the day… They are not showing they have been triggered, other than at their specific set times.

I’m guessing that it is a problem with the Alexa Media Player custom integration. It’s the only custom integration I have, and it has always been buggy… I looked on its GitHub and it looks like someone had a similar-ish problem with it crashing their HA; although, their reported version was a bit older than mine. I will disable the integration and see if the problem continues.

Oh boy. Yeah AMP is buggy as heck. I nearly asked if your were using it. Best advice would be to stop using it if you can.

Do you have any recommendations for speakers to use with home assistant for custom announcements and other stuff? I was looking at a Sonos port or wiim to convert my in-ceiling speakers into a media player for HA. Complications with that include relying on my receiver to turn on/off at the correct times

I really appreciate the help.

I use the Raspiaudio Muse Luxe speakers, just for announcements.

However if you can wait until the Home Assistant Voice hardware announcement next week this might be your best option: https://www.youtube.com/live/ZgoaoTpIhm8?si=hysXAVbeUvlo_DXT as it will support a local voice assistant too.

Update

I woke up this morning and it looks like it crashed again .

Before restarting it, I connected a display to the device to see if it would show anything. This is what it shows.

I will try disabling my automations to see if there is a problem there. I had AMP disabled as well. It’s hard to believe that they could be overwhelming the overkill device!

I don’t know if this is a memory leak. I looked at the memory usage history for the past few days/crashes, but I don’t know exactly what to look for… I put the recent data into a graph and nothing gets above 6.6% before it crashes (slated lines). My device has 16GB of RAM.

Also, the home assistant history graphs are looking a little odd?

I disabled the Bluetooth integration, Alexa media player integration, and custom Asus router integration, as well as all of my automations. My system has been up a running for 2 days!
