I am planning to add Frigate and object recognition to my HA. Some cameras come along with object recognition features, others don’t. Is that relevant for Frigate? Till now I thought “as long as Frigate got an IP and decent resolution”, object recognition will work and that feature is on the software side. Do I have to look for specific cameras with object recognition?
no, the camera supporting object detection or not does not matter. However, cameras that support object detection are also often the ones that have multiple sub streams with configurable resolutions which is an important feature if you want to minimize resource usage of frigate
Frigate has a list of recommended cameras, many of which support said features. And no, Frigate asks for more than an IP and a descent resolution, there are compression technologies that prevent it from doing its job.
not sure what you mean but frigate does not care about the stream compression as long as ffmpeg supports it. It works with all of the options that IP cameras typically support (mjpeg, h264, h265)
Thank you all for your answers. So basically: use the cameras recommended on Frigate’s website or similar with adjustable substreams.
This feels like one of the projects where you think “just leave it” and after a while you don’t regret having everything on my server…
