Home Assistant Newbie: Navigating the Forums & Alexa Won't Turn Off the Right Lamp Or Doesn't Recognize the Skill

As I said, I’m a newbie on HA. I have many computer skills, and am trying to gain the computer skill of setting up my smarthome for my disability. First of all, I don’t know whether this is the official forums or not. That’s where I’m looking to get my question answered. I know my way around linuxquestions.org, and I know my way around forums.linuxmint.com, plus my personal forums, which help me keep track of it all, as well as tell me about other stuff. Unfortunately, I’m pretty new here.

So that’s my first question, I guess, if I am posting on official forums or not. That’s where I’m looking to post.

Second question, if I am, it’s a configuration issue and a voice assistant issue, I’m sure. In my new house, when I am trying to set it up, I have some lightbulbs that respond to the magic home lightbulb app. I’ve got them named and working there. I fixed it so that now home assistant is the listening agent to alexa, the home assistant skill. I pay monthly for the home assistant cloud. I don’t know that I’m using it to it’s fullest extent, but I pay for it.

I’ve got alexa all confused throughout my house. From some she’s saying that she can’t find the skill for my lightbulbs, and for some she’s turning on the wrong devices. Always one single device for every lamp. Google home, seems so far, to work fine, but I haven’t tested everywhere.

You’ll probably need way more details, but those are the basic details you will probably need. First I’d like to make sure I’m in the right place, and if I am, then I want to deal with this issue please. Thanks!

Yes, this is the official Home Assistant Community forum.

Yes, you will need to provide more details. I got rid of Alexa when I installed HA, so I can’t help with that. But, there are many awesome people here who can help.

Take a look at this and then search for and/or post your questions:

Cool! I found it!, Just a second, learning how to post here a bit.

Yep. That’s what I meant to do. So…more details…

I am running HA on a virtualbox vm, which is on linux mint 22.1, modified with my scripts, on a laptop, which has a wireless connection, to my IOT wireless network. I have lots of wireless networks, in my small apartment, and have 5 or so routers, with 4 APs, which run the wireless networks.

I set this up myself, so you can see, I’ve got some computer experience. I just deployed two more machines, exactly like the filesrv which runs HA. But they are not for running HA.

I had messed a bit with the entities since adding the magic home lights, trying to rename them to make them work. I tried to readd since then though.

Things work fine from google home, but alexa is confused. I have 2 amazon accounts for my alexa to use, one is for the household, the other is my personal account. I’m thinking the issue with not being able to find the skill comes from one place having the skill enabled, and one not.

I don’t know about why the naming error though. Perhaps I’ll retest today, and see what it’s doing now, after trying to keep solving it on my own. I don’t think I’m able to solve it on my own. I’m too inexperienced with HA still.

I assume you followed the instructions here?:

And yes you need to enable the skill on the account that contains the voice assistant speakers you are going to be using to control your devices.

if a speaker is controlled from a different account then it won’t know about the devices that are connected from HA to the other account.

Do you see any devices listed under the devices tab in the Alexa mobile app?

I followed that without finding that article. However, I had duplicate names everywhere, when I looked again. Now my Google Home gets confused about the difference between living room lamp, and lamp. But as long as alexa works, I guess it’s OK. I got it fixed for now. Now I can add soon, more smart home lights! Yeah!
