OK so the rpi3 is getting way to slow for home assistant. I am looking for a replacement. But the problem I’ve encountered is Bluetooth. Bluetooth on the Pi works great. Can receive all my temp sensors in the whole house. So I’ve tried installing home assistant on my esxi server through Hassos ova/ubuntu docker/Debian docker. With a tplink Bluetooth stick. The stick is recognized but not all my temp sensors are recognized. Depending on how I connect my bt dongle which one is not recognized. Tried all usb ports/extension cable but no dice. I gave up on my esxi server. So what now. I think I have 2 choices.
Rpi4 4gb (with ssd)
Intel Nuc celeron/i3/i5
But which one to take? And take into account that Bluetooth has to be rock steady and at least as good as the pi3b+.
And if I go the Intel nuc route what is the desired installation? Hassos image/esxi/Debian docker/Proxmox?
If I take the nuc I want to look if I can run a minecraft server on it as well so my last option would be hassos image.
Hassos as a VM sitting next to my Minecraft server VM has been rocksolid for me on an old i7-3770 running Proxmox, but I am not running anything BT, so I can’t speak to that part.
I just migrated to RPi4 from RPi3. The experience is quite good. Notice more responsive in executing automation. Ram usage is around 10%, mine is 4GB version. I’m not using its Bluetooth tough. But in my opinion, RPi4 is powerful enough to handle newer HA
@atomicpapa On my esxi it’s also rock solid. With an i5 cpu. But yeah only Bluetooth was crappy. And I really need that part.
@KCYeoh my pi3 runs ha automations fine. But restarting HA and clicking through menus is rather slow. Also updates fail all the time with the message not enough space. (50gb free) I have to restart ha a couple of times and then it works. But the last update took 2 hours. So I want something faster. A lot faster
I have bit the bullet and bought a esp32 board and flashed esphome on it. The range is not that great but at least I can place it everywhere I want. I read that openmqttgateway can edit more stuff like Bluetooth power. But yeah couldn’t figure out (yet) how it works.
