I’ve narrowed it down to a Netgear Nighthawk issue. I have no idea why but my fresh build would never complete the “Prepairing Home assistant” screen when connected to my Nighthawk AC2600 / R7450 router. I didn’t have a backup router so I hot spotted my phone to a WiFi extender and plugged my Raspberry Pi into its RJ45 plug. After home assistant finished its initial preparation screen I recovered from backup and shut it down. I then plugged it into my Netgear Nightmare / Nighthawk router and booted it up waiting to see its IP address so I could remotely login and finish setting up static reservation and port forwarding etc. hope this helps someone else.
I’m seeing the same problem using a Raspberry Pi 3. Installation and updates fail when connected to a NightHawk AC2400/R7350 router (Xfinity). Switched over to AT&T network and had no problems.
