Home Assistant world comes crashing down

So… this is what happened. I have my HA on rpi3Bversion 0.84.1 for over a year now and last week it was running fine. This week, a different story, first I realized the temp/humidity sensors were not communicating with the zigbee2mqtt add-on, several attempts to restart the add-on failed, then I noticed the node-red add-on was also not working, attempts to restart it also failed. As a last resort, I went under Configurations and clicked on Restart Server, that also didn’t work. This morning, I decided to reboot the system under Hass.IO then system, I believe. HA never came back online after that. I have since tried to recover my configuration files, and the backup files, SUCCESS! I have put the same SD card into another rpi3 B+, but still the same issue, can’t boot up and no IP address on the network.

I’m now resorting to installing a fresh copy of HASS.IO by following the new instructions but I have been stuck on “Preparing Hass.io (This can take up to 20 minutes)” screen for the last 3+ hours. After search through the forums, this doesn’t seem like an one-off incident.

Does anyone have any idea why version 0.84.1 suddenly stopped working and solution for a fix?

Maybe try a new SD Card? Entirely possible that it’s failing.

This is happening to way too many people to be an SD card issue… I’ve run ton’s of other OS’s full time on the same pi and none have failed as many times as HASS.IO

Conversely, this seems to rarely, if ever, happen to people running on other platforms. It may just be the way HA is constantly both reading and writing that wears them out faster than another OS.

Do remember home assistant is working the sd card with a LOT of read writes.
This is not limited to home assistant. Other smart home platforms will have the same issue. And everyones setup is different, so an sd card (identical cards) that may last for 5 years with one person might last for less than a year with another, due again to the amount of read/writing.
