Hello,
I would like some advice if is possible to create a home security solution with your platform, possibly without wired, so Wireless or Z-wave:
Control Unit (ex. Raspberry)
PIR Motion Sensor
Window / Door Sensor
Camera (to record movement or take pictures)
External Siren
App Mobile (to control everythings)
It’s possible but keep in mind that if internet or power is cut to your house, it will render it mostly useless. Yes your sirens will fire, but unless you have trained your neighbors (and can rely on them to call you) most people will chalk it up to a car alarm going off and ignore it. If you’re ok with that, look at this section of the docs:
If you’re not happy with that limitation, you could consider something like SimpliSafe (which also integrates with HA) which features a backup battery as well as a cellular radio so it will call you in the event of an alarm.
The SimpliSafe solution is very very nice and simple but I think is not available in Italy where the power and wifi frequences are different. in any case I sent a note them to know.
I know what you said … I have to implement a solution complete with SIM card to be indipendent and a power supply too.
I think is possible to add sim card stick to raspberry … I just wanted to know if someone already built a similar solution with HA.
Ahh, location is important to include in your posts! Sorry I wouldn’t have suggested that.
I have seen a few mentions of people suggesting a setup with a sim card in their Pi but I’ve never seen any of the projects come to fruition. If I find anything, I’ll PM you though.
Hi @PowerZap, I’m sing HA as part of a home security solution, this is a summary of my setup:
HW:
HA runs on a HP Microserver, powered by UPS, with a 3G USB modem that connects to internet if lost internet connection or if the UPS starts to run in battery mode (power outage).
Also i’m using POE with UPS for ip cameras.
SW:
Zoneminder SW for motion detect and record events. I use multiple “runstates” for differents setups (in home, out home) etc.
HA alarm (alarm in home, alarm away) that changes ZM runstate.
Use location (owntracks + ibeacon) for arm or disarm alarm.
Motion and sound sensors from FOSCAM C1 as sensors in HA for trigger alarms.
“Dogs in house mode” for change the motion and sound sensibility for FOSCAM C1.
HADashboard with Alarm Panel
Simulate presence after motion detection by outside cameras (FOSCAM FI9900P) in Zoneminder:
Turn on the lights closest to the camera that trigger alarm
Turn on tv and play some stuff with plex, …
Use light switches for trigger alarms if alarm is arm in away state
For push notifications in mobile device i’m using:
HA with telegram for notify alarm trigger, send ip cameras snapshots, etc
ZMNinja App for get push notification from Zoneminder.
same plan, i also live in italy. the problem withe a “wireless” solution is that is not really reliable. All the wireless “non security” hardware can be easily jammered. in theory a security hardware can detect a jammer.
I was thinking also so integrate an alarm with HA but in my opinion customs solution cannot grant me the same reliability as an commercial alarm system.
I asked info for a Satel Integra system who can be wired or wireless, integrated via wired telephone or 3G sim, and also allows to use pir sensor as binary sensor in HA.
I’ll update you for any neww I’d you are interested.
I am actually looking at using a 4g backup to my cable modem so my entire network stays up if the internet goes down. This is the device I’m looking at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQRHQYT/
FYI: Been using these for a while now with AT&T, works well with the exception of low bandwidth’s in some areas even with full signal, only able to get under 3Mbs download.
You would need a Dual WAN Router if you are planning to use it as a Fail-over Modem, you won’t be able to connect it between your Modem and Router.
It looks like the router I purchased can be setup with DUAL WANs in a failover configuration - I haven’t set it up yet - it is the non-rack Unifi Security Gateway.
Are you using the NETGEAR LB2120-100NAS? It looks like it has two ports, one a WAN connection and one for a LAN. I assumed I could plug my cable modem into the WAN and then pass the connection through to the LAN (which I read you can do on the Amazon reviews). Have you discovered differently?
But I am happy you pointed this out, it looks like I should be able to get by with the cheaper LB1120 model and setup my router to use a failover dual WAN setup.
It is with the 5.5+ controller software, you can configure the VoIP port (which was never used) to be used as a second WAN (at least that is what I read). In newer models, they now label the second LAN port as WAN2/LAN2.
Once I get my USG configured I’ll have to decide if I want the LB2120 or LB1120. But it looks like both would work for my needs. I tend to think the LB1120 would be better because I am not putting something else between by cable modem and router.
Having lived in Italy there are two options you can broadcast to lower channels with your WiFi or you could use abode also integrates into HASS and has battery backup. It has a SIM card slot to keep it always connected. It also links via ethranet making WiFi a no issue. You would have to use a transformer for power issues.
I agree with @rpitera for sure, but I have been building my home security around this component. A couple comments:
I have my entire HA setup on battery backup (UPS)
I get a PushBullet message when the alarm is triggered
I have a 433 Mhz to MQTT gateway so I can use off the shelf sensors, etc
I do have outside cameras too that I can check remotely if the alarm goes off
