Honeywell Total Comfort Integration Incorrect Password

About 12 hours ago my HA lost communication with the US Honeywell server. I got the “Attention Required” notification for that integration, and when I clicked through it said “Failed to set up: Incorrect Password.”

I tried logging on via the Honeywell web site and it worked normally. But that was using my usual browser, which had stored cookies and possibly credentials, so I didn’t actually have to type the password.

When I tried again from another browser, the Honeywell server indicated that my password was incorrect. I’d been using this password for over three years and have never changed it.

I used the Honeywell process to change the password, and the new one works fine, at least for now.

I’m only posting this here in case others run into the same issue. It would appear that something on the Honeywell side changed or suspended my password.

It was interesting that I could still log on using a browser which had logged on before. I guess that’s a good thing, but it really confused the issue!

Update: It happened again last night. Same prompt to “reconfigure.” Again, the Honeywell app, and web site, (from two different browsers) were working fine. They were all using the same password as I’d previously entered into HA. I verified that the browsers weren’t just using a cached password by typing it in.

Back in HA, I hit “reconfigure” and re-entered the same password. The integration started working again.

I’m beginning to suspect that it’s not simply me going crazy. There seems to be something causing the Honeywell integration to lose or violate the password for the Honeywell servers.

Please post here if you’re seeing anything similar. Maybe we’ll be able to narrow it down to find the cause.

I’m having a similar issue, though I just noticed it yesterday. In my case, clicking Reconfigure and re-entering my password doesn’t work - it says incorrect password. After deleting the Honeywell integration and re-adding it, though, it’s working again (for now)

I’ve been using Honeywell and HA for years and it’s sporadic Honeywell server issues

The solution is just to wait until they fix their problems and it’ll go away… Typically a few hours.

I have also noticed that rebooting two frequently and two short a period Of time will trigger too many call errors and lock you out for a short while.

I’d never seen this issue in over 3-1/2 years of use before now. There have been Honeywell server outages, but the HA integration always resumed normally afterward.

It’s true that there is a rate limit on the Honeywell API. In the beginning I’d hit it occasionally by continually adjusting things. But in that case it was clear what the problem was. If I recall correctly it showed up in the log. It certainly didn’t show up as the “reconfigure” notification above. Of course that could have changed. Maybe now that’s how the integration reports the rate limiting violation.

Not sure which thermostat you have. I have a T9, and could never even get the honeywell integration working with any degree of reliability at all. Started using the homekit integration, and it’s great. Plus, no more cloud latency. Local is always better.

The exact same thing happened to me this morning.

I am surprised that no one has made a thermostat that doesn’t use the cloud. Probably fear of liability. For most HVAC systems it’s a simple four-wire setup.

I have seen some. Since I started using HA I’ve been watching for an option which works locally, but so far the ones I’ve seen all introduce some kind of compromise.

I didn’t realize there was a local-only option with Homekit. Seems like that would be great for anyone invested in the Apple ecosystem.

I’ve made my peace with the Honeywell cloud solution. The HA integration is just icing on the cake. The thermostats work pretty well on their own, and will follow the preset schedule if the internet connection drops. If HA fails I can use their app or web page. That sort of redundancy is essential in an environment where loss of heat can result in burst pipes and such. I also like that they have logic to keep the house at a set temperature, by optimizing the time of each cycle, instead of just having set temperatures for “on” and “off.”

You can put thermostats in parallel. In MOST (but not always) HVAC circuits, you just connect the white and red wires and the heat comes on. You could add a simple thermostat from the 1960’s that uses a bi-metallic coil that connects R & W when the temperature goes low, and opens it when the temperature goes above the set point. Set the backup thermostat to turn on the heat when the temperature drops below 40°F.

Uhh, there is not one single Apple device in my house. Perhaps you should invest in learning more about HA…

For sure! I know nothing about Homekit. So in the interest of learning more, I googled it:

HomeKit is a software framework made by Apple that lets users control smart-home appliances using Apple devices.

And that’s exactly all I know about Homekit. As a fellow non-Apple user, if this is a useful product I’d love to hear more. It’s just that first sentence on the appleinsider site which fooled me into believing it was an Apple-specific thing.

There’s a Home Assistant integration that allows you to connect to HomeKit devices without the need for any apple devices in your house. Check it out, it’s useful for many different things - Honeywell thermostats among them.

PS - Google “Home Assistant HomeKit” next time to get the relevant bits instead of the apple shenanigans.

Enjoy!

Sorry I’m a little late to the discussion… Anyway, RE: @CaptTom posts about the original issue; this has been fixed according to this GitHub issue. I anticipate we will see the fix in the next release of HA.

Regarding the Honeywell Server outage handling, this too should be addressed in the fix (we will see).

Finally, mkmer over on GitHub has been making significant changes to improve the Honeywell TCC (US) integration. He can use any/all support we can give him. I am happy to see the improvements and happy to do any testing or issue reporting.

Thank you!! Are you saying there’s no Apple cloud dependency? That opens up a lot of possibilities! I’ll be paying a lot more attention to anything mentioning HomeKit from now on.

This is great news, thank you! I’ll be looking forward to the next HA version.

Correct. Here’s a video showing how to add a T9 with the local HA homekit integration.
